In the words of Peaches and Herb, "Reunited and it feels so good!" On December 12, Gayl O'Donnell of Lake Wylie, South Carolina got the shock of her life when her veterinarian's office called and said they had her cat Sonny, reports the Citizen-Times. O'Donnell hadn't seen Sonny since he went missing in the late 1990s while in the care of O'Donnell's boyfriend -- a dozen years ago.
I was quiet for a minute, O'Donnell tells the Citizen-Times. They gave me the [microchip] number. I was in disbelief.
Indeed, it was the microchip that Sonny had been implanted with all those years ago that led to his reunion with O'Donnell, who had adopted the cat as a stray kitten in 1997, reports the Citizen-Times.
I was sick for three years, O'Donnell says of Sonny's disappearance. I never got over him. There was no closure. I searched day and night calling out his name. I cried myself to sleep many nights, and throughout the years always wondered what happened to Sonny. Where is he? It was such a mystery.
While it's not clear where Sonny spent most of the past 12 years, he landed at an animal shelter in Asheville after being picked up by animal control officers. Sonny was living on the grounds of a mobile home park, thin and covered with fleas. The shelter scanned Sonny and found his microchip, which led them to O'Donnell's veterinarian.
O'Donnell wasted no time getting to the shelter, where she approached her old friend sitting in a cage. I said, Hey Sonny,' and he put his two paws through the door," O'Donnell tells the Citizen-Times. "I opened the cage, and he nuzzled me like he always did. I was fighting back tears.

“Awwww.. Im sending this to my dd whose cat disappeared on Oct. 30th of this year - Ill tell me not to give up hope”
Several years ago, my daughter’s cat wandered away from home on a day in June, and did not come back. My daughter, who was a young girl at the time, never gave up hope that her beloved cat would return. We adults did not share that sentiment, but did not want to break her heart any further. However, in October of that same year, nearly 5 months later, my son saw the cat in the yard. My daughter whistled to her and she jumped in her arms. She was skinny and skittish, but soon fattened up. She is ten years old now and living the life of a Princess. Tell your “dd” ( what is that I wonder?) that cats often return.
Our cat went missing the first week of November. Sadly, he wasn’t chipped, as he was mostly a house cat and we just never thought he’d disappear on us. We’ve been sick about it ever since. We’re still hoping he returns.
My sister had a cat named Sabrina that disappeared. He came home a year later, very thin and sickly, front of mouth covered in dirt as if he had been eating dirt.
She had no idea where he went for a year but naturally took him to the vet, got antibiotics and feeding him, taking care of him but he was too far gone and did pass.
Sad ending but to anyone who has had a cat gone missing, it’s true, sometimes they come home. Hopefully in condition that is favorable.
Where do these cats get to?
: )
A Merry Catmouse and a Tabby New Year to kitty lovers, one and all!

Now you have me crying.
Why is he hiding his identity? lol
“Where do these cats get to?”
They time travel, of course.
Good about the cat tho, I like happy endings to pet stories.
;-)
Some stories just have a happy ending.... What a great gift.
I will be rescuing a couple of cuties later in 2010! I'm looking forward to it!
