Hello all. I hope Christmas treated you all well and you equally survived the onslaught of in-laws ;-)
My wife got an MP3 player as one of her presents. She has quite a bit of music she already likes, but looking to broaden her horizons.
I turned her onto Alicia Keyes "Falling" which she likes. I have all the usual suspect mp3's she likes and am on the hunt for other artists that we have overlooked or simply do not know about.
To give you some idea, she likes acoustic music with some "soul" to it (no, not R&B or "SOUL"). She likes Patti Loveless, Evanescense, Marina Mcbride, (just turned onto) Alicia Keyes' Falling; basically, she likes women singers with strong/powerful voices. In other words, the singer's lyrics/singing is not drowned out by the music 'cause they cannot sing.
Soooo...I was wondering what fellow freepers were listening to and what new tastes we could acquire..We will be posting some Youtube links across the evening and would encourage the same?
Have fun and thanks for posting!!
Fun thread ping....
Within Temptation
Five for Fighting. Kind of a throw back to singer-songwriters, but great lyrics and several songs you’ll recognize - but most freepers should know this guy.

Maybe she would like Niamh Parsons?
Any particular song to get us started with?
Norah Jones is really good.
She did a break-away band called “The Little Willies” which is her on vocals, but with a more jazzy/swing kind of sound.
And if you know who Lou Reed is, “Cow Tipping” is the funniest song ever written...
He’s just tipping them over, he isn’t eating them!
Patty Griffin Latest Album is Gospel but earlier ones are perfect.
Mindy Smith One of my favorites
Tyrone Wells Great lyrics and vocals
Lori McKenna I've been on a three week Lori binge and can't stop
If you are looking for a new artist doing solid country go to www.maggiemaecountry.com and listen
+1 you!
Wow...Forgot about Norah Jones!
How about some Shirley Bassey?
Adele. Smoky, bluesy but contemporary, somehow innocent and worldy at the same time. Quite the talent for just 20 years old. A good introductory tune from her to sample would be “Chasing Pavements.”
Grizzly Bear. Indie accoustic, but occasionally veering into almost experimental, while still retaining a pop sensibility. A good introductory tune from them to sample would be “Two Weeks.”
I also get a kick out of Duffy. Imagine Jessica Rabbit as a very skilled sendup of a good singer in an R&B nightclub. “Mercy” would be the one to hear, to decide if she’s appropriate for iPod rotation for you.
I’m an old fuddy dud on such scores . . .
John Michael Talbott,
The Gaithers et al
Celtic Woman
Sandi Patti
Lots of good stuff so far! Thank you all for posting. These diddy’s are right up her alley.
You had already heard of her, or you did some quick research?
Just about anything by her is good but the linked video above is my favorite.
Had heard of her. Had her first CD. I can’t recall how we got turned on to her; honestly, I think it might have been SNL..
I like her a lot
Hmm, you heard any Anita Baker and Toni Braxton?? and Vonda Shepherd.
I stumbled across my video of my newest song “Your My Sweet And Sour Candy” up on an online TV Radio Magazine called NME this weekend. You might check it out if want it it’s still being featured. http://www.nme.com/awards/video/id/XrfMecOnHd8
Patty (Ramey) Loveless is my 4th cousin. Loretta Lynn and her sister Cristal Gayle are my 5th cousins twice removed and 14 time Grammy winner Ricky Skaggs is my 3rd cousin. Small world isn’t it? LOL But they got all the talent in our family. LOL

It’s spelled Shepard.
I’d never listed to Lou until I was in twenties. I watched David Bowie’s 50th B-Day concert and he performed “Dirty Blvd” and “White Light, White Heat” w/ Lou. I think the clips might be on youtube. Worth checking out.
I’d second the recommendation for Eva Cassidy...she’s awesome.
Have you listened to Coldplay? They’re pretty good as well. Mellow Brits.
Baby, Don’t You Break My Heart Slow.. love that song.
If she likes Evanescense, there are a lot of great Dutch, German and other European bands she may like. Check out Within Temptation, Epica, Delian, Leaves Eyes and Nightwish.
If you buy nothing else, get Katie Melua!!!
Katie Melua - The Closest Thing To Crazy
I would also like suggest Candye Kane. She is the best blues vocalist I've ever heard, Candye has a "colorful" past and liberal social values, but I can overlook that and just listen to her sing. Here's one of my favorite cuts:
Madeleine Peyroux - dance me to end of love

Melody Gardot - Goodnight

But that’s some serious talent!!! Be proud.
Interesting list. For ten years, I booked touring bands at Johnny D’s in Somerville (Boston) MA
Everyone there loved Marcia Ball beyond anyone else. (And I understand why) Susan Tedeschi came out of our blues jams, her parents owned some local supermarkets. To this day, to me, she’s OK, but she had everything handed to her. Sue Foley was a favorite from her very earliest days. I don’t know where she is now, but I hope it’s good. Lou Ann Barton was there with Marcia and Angela Strehli for a special show - for some reason Lou Ann was totally out of it that night. It was sad and embarrasing for everyone, customers were calling us up and yelling the next day. But it worked out - I’m really happy for how Lou Ann Worked out her problems.
Looking over the rest of this list - only a few need mentioning.
ETTA JAMES. She is the one, the only one. Of all the female vocalists in the known universe, Etta is the only one. The best...ever...there is nothing else to say.
Sarah Vaughan - someone from even beyond my time, but someone from jazz, yet so soulful and... I don’t think she even belongs in this thread, except that she is so wonderful.
This is interesting. But so many of the comments seem to indicate the commenters have no concept of what soul means.
Yeah, I know Candye, too. She is a wonderful person, and has gone through a lot of problems in the last year or two. I am really happy for her, and hope it’s working out.
To be fair, the original poster was not exactly looking for soul, but accoustic with some "soul" to it, not "SOUL" or pure R&B. He was also looking for new. Etta James is iconic, and has influenced so many. I know her well, her being a native Tarheel. But, new she isn't.

I fell in love with these guys, and I guarantee your wife will, too. Don’t think she’d like this type of music?
I didn’t think I would either.

“To be fair, the original poster was not exactly looking for soul, but acoustic with some “soul” to it”
What exactly is the difference? If you’ve been around long enough, you know that the beginning of “soul” traces back to Ray Charles when those who didn’t even understand him described his singing as “having soul.” That somehow eventually became perverted into calling an entire style of music soul. (I still remember a wonderful instance of a History of Rock and Roll Radio Show where they interviewed Ray and he said, ‘well, they call everything soul now, that’s a soul desk, that’s a soul chair - this was about 1969.)
“Some soul” I’ve heard over the years that you might not consider soul music would include Roy Head, B.J. Thomas, and Jeannie Seely and her only real hit, “Don’t Touch Me.”
If you want somebody new - and I don’t even think she is that new, just not known by the general public, and if it needs to be female - I will suggest Kacey Jones and her Mickey Newbury tribute album. In the last decade, there are only two (the other being James Hunter) things I’ve come across that I can listen to over and over. This is soulful in the understated sense, sorta like Sammi Smith but not as husky.
Noisettes.
The YouTube video to look for would be “Never Forget You.”
For this track at least, it’s a sort of updated, Phil Spector girl group sound. Very strong, soaring lyrics by the lead singer, who is a truly stunning black woman. Her name is Shingai Shoniwa, born I believe in Zimbabwe, but raised in South London.
From Wikipedia:
“Shoniwa, along with Patti Smith and Juliette Lewis helped celebrate Jack Daniel’s birthday in Lynchburg, Tennessee on 13 October 2007. The three joined by The New Silver Cornet Band for the show which took place at the company’s distillery. The show is part of the 157th birthday celebrations for Jack Daniel, who was born sometime in September 1850. The Birthday JD Set opened to specially invited guests and competition winners only.”
