GALVESTON — The 21st annual Kwanzaa Celebration sponsored by the Nia Cultural Center begins today at the Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Ave. M. “Kwanzaa, A Celebration of Life, Love, Unity and Hope,” will be the theme.
The marketplace opens at 3 p.m., and the celebration starts at 4 p.m. Performers include the Kuumba House African Dancers and Drummers, the L.A. Morgan Scarlett Drill Team, spoken word by Apotheosis Epidemic and Imani Jackson, a praise dance by Gwendolyn Butler and the annual Kwanzaa Village Keeper Awards.

Kwanzaa is like Festivus for black people, i.e. a made up holiday with made up “traditions”.
Galveston has long had a shared history with New Orleans. Both were, and still are, major Gulf Coast Port Cities (although both ports have been long displaced by Houston) with large Catholic populations, with very similiar architecture and culture.
It now looks like the present Galveston is now catching up to the “modern” New Orleans.

If a particular ethnic group can create a fake holiday out of nothing, then any ethnic group can do so. Someone (someone important) should have the guts to tell the truth about Kwanzaa.
