A Strafford County woman with gastrointestinal anthrax is in critical condition in an out-of-state hospital. State health officials say the infection may have been caused by naturally occurring spores carried in African instruments used at a monthly drum circle at United Campus Ministry at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
The woman is the state's first confirmed case of anthrax infection in more than 50 years. The last cases occurred in 1957, when nine employees of Arms Textile Mill in Manchester were infected.

Only a few days ago I watched an old Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode about a near epidemic of anthrax caused by a bongo drum a musician brought in from Mexico. Sometimes life is really eerie.
Hehheh. I kinda figured they were harmless but now I have other thoughts.
If they get in your walls or under your floors, arson is the only way to get rid of them.

It’s no coincidence that this happened in Durham, home of UNH. There used to be a group in Plymouth (nearer me), home of Plymouth State U. but I don’t know if there still is or not. Might be something you’d find at the UCC church there.

Second anthrax death in Scotland
Health authorities in Scotland have confirmed that a second heroin user, who tested positive for anthrax, has died.
The man was being treated at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Last week, another man with the infection died in the city’s Victoria Infirmary. A woman who also tested positive is being treated at the hospital.
A fourth case of anthrax has been confirmed in Lanarkshire. The patient, who is a drug-injecting heroin user, is being treated at Monklands District General Hospital.
Anthrax is a deadly bacterial infection which occurs mostly in animals in Asia and Africa. Humans are seldom infected and it is extremely rare for anthrax to be spread from person to person.
Health specialists across the country have been reviewing recent cases of injecting drug users who have infections but no new cases have been identified.
