Firearms and a parrot stolen from a South Beach apartment
Miami New Times ^ | December 29, 2009 | Francisco Alvarado

Posted on 12/29/2009 5:21:24 PM PST by TEXOKIE

Michael Beasley hobbled up the stairs leading to his second-floor apartment near the southern tip of Miami Beach. On the way home from Haulover Park, the 60-year-old Jacksonville native had purchased a couple of burgers for himself and his beloved green Amazon parrot, Seaweed. Then something startled Beasley. His front door had been pried open.

Normally, Seaweed would squawk the greeting, "Hey, how ya doing?" But this time there was silence.

Beasley, who walks with a cane because of a back injury, limped into his living room. The bird and his six-foot domed cage were gone. So were the 32-inch plasma TV set and the DVD player. He continued into the bedroom and found the closet door open.

After peering inside, he turned pale. Burglars had stolen his and his wife's prized gun collection. Among the missing firearms: seven handguns (including a .357-caliber Ruger), a pistol-grip 12-gauge shotgun, two SKS 72 assault rifles, and three Heckler & Koch machine guns that can fire 1,200 to 1,300 rounds per minute. "These guns use bullets that chew through stucco and that can take people out in a drive-by," Beasley explains. "Whoever stole my guns has a tremendous amount of firepower. They hit the jackpot."

The bold daytime heist provides a glimpse into the alarming number of high-powered rifles and machine guns that are stolen every year. Many end up in the hands of criminals...

If you can afford full-auto firearms, you can afford a safe.

The parrot probably cost as much as all of the firearms combined. You would think he could afford a safe AND a security system.

I take a couple of those $200 AKs. You know, just because they seem to be on sale down there.

“It doesnt seem like good judgment, does it?”

Sad because I bet the old guy is a conservative. Some very nice guns and his parrot was his pal. South beach is a bad play for crime, stolen cars, and break-ins.

I see what you mean. Very sad that a good soul (we think he is!)would become the target of such awfulness. Very sad that on appearances, he may not have taken adequate precautions. It is a fable story for all of us to look at and pay attention to for whatever lessons may apply in our individual circumstances.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PARROT UNATTENDED IN A HIGH CRIME AREA!!

I did not challenge anyone's enrollment on this forum.

You feel better after making your statement?

BTW, I'll say what the hell I want to and I certainly do not need your approval / drivel to do so.

Now if that upsets you.....go pound sand.

The 5.7mm cartridge was introduced as a rifle round. Steel core bullets were sold for it, as they are perfectly legal for a rifle. When FN began importing the handgun, it became illegal for FFL dealers to sell the steel core ammunition, although posession and private sale of it is legal.

The last time I checked, the stuff cost $100 for a box of 50, and that was before Fort Hood.

Yikes! Anyone that can afford that might as well move on up to .50 BMG. I'm still grumpy because .22 lr is over 2 cents per round.

I didn't know that. Is there no ammo available in 5.7mm w/o a steel core? Many kinds of cartridges are made with steel cores and numerous guns in a given chambering will fire them. Of course. I wouldn't call my 30.06 hunting rifle an "armor-piercing rifle" just because they make 30.06 cartridges with steel core bullets.

You can take a chill pill now.

There was no harm intended in what I said.

So go relax for a bit.

Or do you want to make something out of this?

If you do, I'm ready - Mr. DoGooder.
