We had a family friend who was from Cowpens.

She always hated saying she was from Cowpens whenever anyone asked where she was from, as it "sounded tacky."

Then she went to New York with several other women to shop and take in some Broadway plays. At the hotel where they stayed, she signed the hotel registry as being from Greenville, SC.

The desk clerk saw her registration card and asked her, "Greenville? Isn't that near Cowpens?"

The man is a real piece of work pushing around his old mother like that. Momma is meaner then you son, but at least she didn’t aim for the heart.

Cowpens was the site of a decisive battle of the Revolutionary War, nobody should be embarrassed about the "tacky" name.

The Battle of Cowpens, January 17, 1781, took place in the latter part of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution and of the Revolution itself. It became known as the turning point of the war in the South, part of a chain of events leading to Patriot victory at Yorktown. The Cowpens victory was one over a crack British regular army and brought together strong armies and leaders who made their mark on history.

It's also the name of a decorated WWII US Navy ship. USS Cowpens (CVL-25)

My son lives in Spartanburg and goes to college in Gaffney. He drives through Cowpens nearly every day, and often calls me on his way back home. The cell phone coverage is lousy in Cowpens ... we nearly always get disconnected when he’s driving through there.
