Mayo facility in W. Valley to stop taking Medicare payments

"Low reimbursements have led one West Valley medical facility to stop taking certain Medicare patients, a pilot program that an Arizona health-care expert says may become a long-term trend in the industry."

"For Mayo Clinic, the cost of providing services to Medicare patients exceeded the total amount paid on behalf of Medicare patients by $840 million in 2008, according to the hospital."

"Mayo Clinic was the first health-care system to go in this direction, and I don't think they will be the last," Rivers said. "Everyone else is facing the same pressures as Mayo Clinic, and I won't be surprised to see more of this in the future."

They may no longer be acceptiong PAYMENTS but under Obama care they will not be able to opt out of treating PATIENTS

Has anyone seen that language in the bill yet? Where doctors or hospitals are forced to treat whoever the government tells them they have to treat

That’s a scary thought. Where are Medicare patients supposed to get health care if doctors and medical facilities stop accepting patients with this health care insurance? The health care reform (barf) being forced down our throats wants to give people the option of entering Medicare before retirement age. Where will they be able to find medicare care? IMHO there needs to be an increase in payments to doctors and medical facilities who take Medicare patients.

At some point, this becomes another form of slavery.

My Internal Medicine doc who, in Asheville, NC, has lots of medicare patients says he may go totally private. I said sign me up for that. He is the only doctor in the office and has 1 nurse, maybe 2 and 2 office people who’s salary he also pays.

This makes death panels unnecessary. No doctors accepting Medicare, no treatment for seniors = shovel ready (cemetary) jobs and Obama, Pelosi and democrats nationwide can brag about higher job statistics. There's always a method to their madness......

I went through this with my local hospital and Doctors when they chose not to accept Aetna. We just had to deal with filing our claims directly.

Air fare? Air fare? No, of course not. Get with the times. You're going to have to ride the 'hound or take the banana boat to get there. It's not like anyone would need immediate care after all, right? ;-) Good luck and have a prosperous and healthy 2010!

More than one doctor I have tried to switch to over the last 2-3 years had already stopped taking NEW Medicare patients. So I stayed with the doctor I was already seeing because he was fine, it was the hospital I would have to go to that was bothering me.
