Washington — More than 30,000 Muslims from across America attended the 46th annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) July 3–6 in Washington, where they heard calls for building bridges of understanding and for increased involvement in community service programs.
The ISNA meeting is described as the largest annual gathering of Muslim Americans. Also included were parallel conventions by the Muslim Students Association of North America, Muslim Youth of North America, the Islamic Medical Association of North America, and many smaller groups associated under the umbrella group ISNA.
In addition to building bridges of understanding and cooperation between diverse Muslim communities, ISNA now plays a pivotal role in extending those bridges to include all people of faith in North America. Various speakers illustrated this new, broader agenda.
Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser and assistant to President Obama for public engagement and intergovernmental affairs, commended ISNA for addressing critical issues such as “increasing civic engagement and interfaith cooperation, protecting the rights of the disabled and elderly, addressing domestic violence, improving education and health care, expanding renewable energy and protecting the environment.”
“As this convention demonstrates,” she said, “gone are the days of describing distinct sets of ‘Muslim issues’ and ‘American issues.’ Your work here is crucial in confronting the challenges that all Americans are facing. And you help advance the new beginning between the United States and Muslim communities around the world that the president called for in Cairo.”
ISNA President Ingrid Mattson talked about the diversity of Islam and Muslims’ changing place in American society.

Wasn’t there a time when Cat Stephens was not welcome in the US? Seems to me I remember an incident where he was on a list of those who could not visit and was denied entry.
Useful Idiots sucking up to an extremist religion.
We must allow no visitors or immigrants from Muslin countries that don’t reciprocate with the freedom to build Christian and Catholic Churches in their countries or where their peoples persecute Christians.
Now that’s a courageous message of outreach I’d like to see Pastor Warren demand of his Muslim admirers.
I would not give Warren one red cent and was thrilled to see Fox seemingly cut him loose this holiday and didn’t run his programs wall-to-wall as they did the prior two or three years over Christmas.
Cat Stevens was an enthusiastic supporter of jihad and praised the 9/11 terrorists. He seems to have realized that overtly expressing that attitude was counterproductive, however.
Valerie Jarrett is a Muslim, and Rick Warren is an idiot.
He was on the ‘no fly’ list, yet made it on a plane to the USA.. He was sent right back to the UK. He had made donations to terrorist organizations.
That would take courage rather than sappy sentimentality. He won’t do it.

Muslims need to be told to stop acting as Muslims.
The Muslims need to do the outreaching, saying ‘sorry, Christian and Jewish brethren for our past deeds and hatred of you. We repent of that.’. But you’re not going to see THAT happen.
