looks like a good deal all around, except for the people who “got to see it now”.

Yeah, that sounds cool. I haven't gotten that hooked into the big screen TV yet, but I'm hoping to do something with the Apple TV but I think that I'll have to use a "NetFlix Ready Device" of some sort...

So, it will probably be both hooked into the big screen. I'm hoping that it's all wireless and I'm pretty sure it can be done that way with the Apple Airport Extreme router that I have. I've already got 25 mbits down on my broadband, so that's no problem... :-)

A supplier makes a deal with a distributor to enhance the profitability of both. Works for me.

For me, the back catalog isn’t that much of a draw. I generally get disks for new releases, TV series that aren’t on streaming and a few oddball things. I’m a watch it once and never think about it again person. There are only a few dozen movies I own and actually watch again.

Improved streaming selection is good, but with looming ISP bandwidth caps, there may be little future in it.

You were saying ...

it isn’t “free on the Internet”... it is “easy to steal on the Internet”

Quite true... :-)

I know it "doesn't fly" with the studios, but I use it in a fairly casual way, myself (i.e., with BitTorrent).

For example, I could watch one of these programs on TV though Hulu or some other similar service, for free, just like I would watch it on my own TV for free (if you don't mind the commercials, of course).

But, then again, perhaps I might watch it for free on my DVR, because I have already recorded it and it's sitting there. Then I don't have to watch the commercials and can speed through it. But, then again, that very same show that I could see on Hulu or on my DVR (through cable), I could get on BitTorrent, too. So, what's the difference with them all -- well..., BitTorrent, if you watch that show from that souce -- you're "stealing". If I watch it through Hulu, I'm "okay". If I watch it on my DVR, I'm "okay" again.

But, I could take it off the DVR and put it on a DVD, or even put it on my own computer hard drive and look at it that way, and "keep it" for as long as I want. That's getting a bit more "cloudy" and "questionable" doncha know.

So, I really don't care which way I do it... so that's my casual way of doing it... LOL...

Again..., with Popular TV Show "X"

Mind you, this is all the same show that I'm talking about... :-)

My home network is over a standard Linksys 802.11g router but the ISP is Clearwire. I'm in their first market in the US and it is the legacy "pre-WiMax" system which runs from 1.5-2 MBPS down, when it is working well. If the conn. would hold a solid 1.0 over time it would probably stream HD okay, and indeed I watch some of the Fox series' that way and it's more often than not OK. But for a pay service to deliver a lot of movies it would be a disappointment. I think you're in PDX so you could get their 4G via Clear.com or Sprint. It is very fast but I hear they don't offer "unlimited" and the premium (or slowdown) kicks in at 5 GB. That is practically nothing if you play video streams. At least I don't have a limit.

We do have cable here that runs from 10-12 MBPS down but it is lots more $$ per month. But for various reasons I won't do business with a cable co. but as a last resort.

I used to do Netflix but we just didn't watch enough movies to justify the expense. I am more often tuned to news and other portrayals of the real world the wife likes her ghost/paranormal shows (which are phony if you ask me).

The other day someone came stumbling in with a DVD of Blind Side and we did watch that. They didn't say where it came from and I didn't ask, but the FBI splash screen said something about breaking the disc after viewing it. I guess not everyone is compliant with those promotional copy policies. What a shocker.

We have a PS3.
My nephew has an Xbox.

Netflix quality is great on both.

With a tower connected, we can watch YouTube and Hulu though, so that’s a plus.
