When Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of the 1945 atomic bomb blasts that brought the second world war to an end, died on Monday at the age of 93, the mayor of Nagasaki said that his death marked the loss of "a precious storyteller". Now, however, it appears that Yamaguchi's story may yet reach a whole new audience – courtesy of a big-budget film by Avatar director James Cameron.
Cameron is believed to have met with Yamaguchi on 22 December during a brief promotional trip to Japan. Today, Variety reports that Cameron has bought the film rights to The Last Train to Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back, a non-fiction book by Charles Pellegrino which is published in the US on 19 January.
Pundits are speculating that the film-maker could be eyeing it as a potential directorial project for himself. The historical subject matter would certainly be a change

After their divorce, everything Cameron has touched has sucked. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Correction. After his divorce, Cameron started making a ton of money. Have the top movie in history and most likely the number two (soon) is not a bad gig if you can get it. FREEPERS are very jealous of success which is very surprising because being capitalists and such.
How did the humans attack the aliens in the movie? Was it the usual massed infantry approach (from the 19th century) Cameron used in humans vs machines large scale battles in the Terminator movies? Or was it the kind of thing we're doing in Pakistan - smart bombs dropped from 25,000 feet?

I was happy it wasn't a needlessly smut filled movie. I was dissapointed that it made heroes out of the spiritually strong, yet primitive natives, and demons of what were essentially "westerners" - too bad that spirituality focused on "Mother Earth". If it were even indirectly focused on God, who gave us our universe, it would have been good. Regardless, my 13 year old said it was too long.
Growing up in South America I know that the opposite is true.
The native indians, killed each other, sacrificed humans including babies, and yes, worshiped Pacha Mama (Mother Earth), but they did not have Christian values. Although many good people are found among them.
Westerners brought Jesus, advancements, human rights, and education. They did evangelize and did return with gold. So what?
Civilizations that worshipped things other than God are not in a good place. James Cameron wants to portray Mother Earth worshipers as superior. History tells us differently.

A better film would be about the atrocities of socialist-communist nations up to and including endless bread lines, 100 million dead, exportation of revolutions and other wars, purges, gulags, and constant and mindless saber-rattling.

I actually liked Titanic, but have not seen Avatar and will not because it does not interest me at all.
I liked the engine-room scenes; aside from that I thought it was kind of lame.
It's not like I didn't know the boat was gonna sink. ;-)
