I am very frustrated with having to wait and wait and wait for each and every webpage I want to look at to load. Firefox (the latest version, whatever that is) hangs and hangs and hangs, with the progress bar oh-so-slowly filling, then you get the blue message box of death "Firefox can't find the server" and similar messages. If you keep clicking on the "try again" button, you usually get to where you want to go eventually, but it's like a salmon swim upstream. I should add that I have Kaspersky Internet Security running to protect my 'puter.
This hanging seems to be worse on certain webpages, like the NY Daily News or Earthlink, and is worse at some times of the day (although in the middle of the night, it can still happen).
Does any FReeper out there have a clue as to why this annoying thing is happening? Sure do appreciate a fix, if it's possible.
I have given up on Firefox. It used to be very clean, elegant and easy to use. These days, it is only marginally better than IE.
Use Google Chrome. For most routine browsing it works fine and never hangs.

Firefox’s update caused my computer to go sooooooooo slow thatI had to remove it, I’m using Opera now and I love it.
Make sure you DON’T have Skype as a Firefox Add-On. Check Tools>Add-Ons. If there delete or uninstall.
Also try out the Flash blocker add-on called “Flashblock”. No more dancing mortgage-credit score-car insurance ads.
What operating system are you using and who’s your ISP?
I’m using Firefox 3.5.7 and not seeing a problem.
Try downloading some other browsers, say Opera, Safari, or Chrome, and see if they too exhibit the hang. If so, it’s probably your internet connection.
Kaspersky sometimes has a plug in to vet web sites and that can cause massive slow downs. Check your plug ins to see what you have installed.
Why does firefox hang ?
You have to speak to it in Russian ?
It sounds like your A/V is hanging things by not letting FF get its packets out. Check the logs in your A/V package to see if it’s got any log items that relate to FF.

Me too. I loved FF, but the longer it is on, the slower it gets. For example, when doing an Email, 10 keystrokes might take 10 seconds to print, uggg.
I am also now using Chrome. It has some nice features.
I also, just this past hour, upgraded my IE7 to 8.
IE has seemed like an antique compared to FF and Chrome

Also try emptying your cache and browser history. I've seen those databases get screwed up and cause problems.

The thing I like most about Chrome is it’s simplicity.
FF and IE have both succumbed to the temptation to add every single bell, whistle, gizmo and feature they can to the things — most of which I do not want, do not need and do not want to waste time trying to turn off or remove.
Let’s just hope that Chrome stays lean in the future.
Firefox 3.5.x tends to hang so I reverted back to the old 3.0.x which seems to be ok. The reason I think is what also causes Google chrome to hang in the default setup. I am forgetting the term for it, but in the default setting Google chrome (and I guess firefox too) tries to do a DNS lookup up of all web addresses associated with the links on the page you are currently on and cache it. In other words while you are reading the content on a page, behind the scenes it looks up the IP addresses of all links on that page and saves them. It does this to save time so when you actually click on a link, it will have the IP address ready. Problem is sometimes it gets stuck while doing DNS lookups and stops responding. Google chrome lets you disable this feature (under the advanced tab) but I am not sure how firefox handles it.
Using new install of FF and works just fine ....

It found 11 hangups in Firefox and eliminated (they haven’t come back)and one big piece of crap in my PC startup, along with 57 unnecessary file exts and 4 other blocked paths, all cleared up. The file exts and 4 blocked paths recur though, but everything runs quicker now.

Yep. Firefox can get more features with addons than Chrome can, but even a stripped down bare firefox installation gets lapped by Chrome anymore. Have chrome on my notebook computer, but my desktop still clinging to Firefox, though not sure why anymore.
Been seeing a “stopped script” warning from my anti-virus. It identifies the stopped script, within Firefox, as being a “chrome” script. I suspect Google chrome is invading Firefox, tagging it in some fashion. It definitely slows down Firefox. Have had to command the script to stop, then reopen the Firefox browser. Very annoying. Perhaps 3.5.7 version stops this.

Also get a free download from filehippo of CCleaner (Crap) Cleaner, it does as the name implies and stays up to date. Keeps browser, recycle bin, histories clean besides worthless cookies.
FF is a buggy piece of crap that gets worse with every release. It leaks memory like a cheap hose leaks water and just loves to consume your whole cpu if given half a chance.
That being said, it’s still my primary browser because of the incredible productivity addons made for it.
Helpful hints:
1. Look at all of the extensions and addons and disable all that you don’t need, which is most of them. You’ll notice a bunch that were installed behind your back by every crapola program every installed on your computer.
2. After long usage times, exit FF and start fresh, as FF will grow infinitely large in size as well as accumulating other problems from long term usage.
3. Make sure you have the latest adobe flash reader for FF installed.
4. Flashblock and “adblock plus” help too.

Yes, the add ons are a big problem with FF.
I have eliminated most of them.
What is also bad is that with every FF upgrade, it gets worse.

Try safari.
1) Who is your Internet Service Provider?
2) Are you using the Domain Name Server address provided by the ISP?
3) Are you running a router that is directly connected to your broadband modem, if you have broadband?
Since I recently installed a router in my system (a router provided by EarthLink and is directly connected to ADSL modem), I configured my computer to look automatically for the IP and DNS address automatically, since the DNS server address is configured on the router itself.

I agree with you on that point, and the one reason that I do not like having to use their Chrome.

She recommends using “Startpage” for a search engine.
First, make sure that your version of Firefox is up to date. Recent Windows fixes might have broken your installation. Your big problem, however, might be the cable connection. If a few kids in the neighborhood are playing online games, they may be chewing up the available bandwidth on your part of the network. Everything will appear slow if that’s the case.

I had similar problems. My wifes PC would not get out but our Macs could get out albeit somewhat sporadically and slow.
Change your DNS settings to OpenDNS (free at basic level)
Open DNS is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.220
Once I did that problem resolved. Earthlink customer service really sucks and I dread having to talk to them
Google Chrome is working good for me so far.
I use Ask.com for my search engine, or Profusion as well. I get the best results from them.

Cool. I’m on a wintel machine at the moment. The download site only shows wintel options. I assume it’s doing some kind of autodetect on the OS.
One thing I was surprised I liked is that in Chrome you do your search in the url bar and oddly enough, Google lets you use an engine besides Google, which Safari doesn't do. It's definitely faster and has a smaller footprint than any of the other browsers.

I use Earthlink cable as my service provide. I have no idea what your second question is about! I do have a router that I bought myself connected to my cable modem, as an extra level of protection. I also have SpyBot and run it about once a week, Better Privacy, and run a Kaspersky scan also about once a week. So far, the SpyBot hasn’t found any invader nor has Kaspersky.

Personal Computer optimizer, it runs tests on loading speeds, downloading speeds and hundreds of other functions.
I’ve had good luck with one.
I find when everything freezes, it's usually a security program that causes it when it's updating.
A fresh reinstall of the program may help also.
