LONDON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A London museum stripped its photographer of the year of his award Wednesday because judges now say he rented his subject from a wildlife park.
The picture by Spanish photographer Jose Luis Rodriguez was one of more than 43,000 submitted to the Natural History Museum's annual competition, The Guardian reported. It shows an Iberian wolf leaping a fence in an apparent effort to get to farm animals.
The museum removed the photograph from an exhibit of winners Wednesday, although it remains in books published by BBC wildlife. Rodriguez must return a 10,000-pound ($16,300) prize and cannot enter the competition again.
The judges were impressed by the photograph, with one calling it "a masterfully executed moment." But calls began coming in from other Spanish photographers saying they recognized the wolf, allegedly an animal named Ossian at the Canada Real wildlife park in Madrid.
Some experts also questioned the shot because a wild animal would be more likely to deal with a fence by wriggling between the bars than by jumping over it like a racehorse.
I have seen that before.

How about the "experts" time how long it takes to wriggle between the bars vs. jumping over a fence.
I didn't know you could train wolves for Agility. Only a matter of time before somebody enters a rent-a-wolf in a Dog Agility trial. . . .

Hmmmm... No German Shepherd would suffer the indignity of wriggling thru a fence if it had the option to jump it. A fence is like a trap, best avoided if possible. I wonder why wolves would be different?
In such an event, the wolf may try and eat some of the competition. Makes for an easier win.

They didn’t notice that the photographer used multiple light sources, or that the wolf looks like someone just gave it a bath and trimmed its fur???
What do I make of this fact? Why do multiple Spanish photographers know a wolf in a wildlife park by name?

Yeah, but efforts to do what? He hadn't done anything.
Competition Rule #8
Subjects and Ethics Only pictures of wild animals and plants and landscapes are eligible subjects. Images of domestic animals (cats, dogs, farm animals, etc) and cultivated plants (species or hybrids grown in a cultivated setting) do not count as wildlife. Pictures of captive animals (animals that do not live a free and wild existence) or involving baiting using live bait are not eligible, and any other baiting must be declared. Pictures of animal models or any other animals being exploited for profit may not be entered. Images of animals being restrained in any way are only accepted in the One Earth and Wildlife Photojournalism categories when illustrating an issue. The competition asks photographers to put the welfare of animals first and to safeguard their environment and that they do not do anything to injure or distress animals or destroy the environment in their attempt to get the shot. If the Owners or the Judges suspect that a picture was taken using cruel or unethical practices, the entry will be disqualified.
The MinPins and Chihuahuas TRY but are not able to succeed as a general rule. They get DQed anyhow.
Thank goodness I always ran my dog in the 20" or 22" class (depending on the association) so I wouldn't have to deal with the nasty little yap dogs (in the 8" class or lower) or the wolves who would probably be in 24" or 26". At least according to the "International Wolf Center" - whoever they are!

(The original "Ossian" was a supposed epic Irish poem, much beloved by Napoleon, which turned out to be a forgery by an enterprising Celtic Revival dude named James MacPherson. What with him and Iolo Morganwg (whose real name was Ed Williams, which just doesn't have that true Celtic resonance to it . . . ) the 18th century fraud department was jumpin'!
