Kids can skip school and end up in the back seat of cars. How is this the parent’s fault?

But that's not what happened here, unless Sarah was lying through her teeth when she talked to the media about it. Her story was that she certainly knew Bristol and Levi had been dating, and had been planning to get married even before the pregnancy came along. Since everybody else in Wasilla seems to have known that Levi was a druggie party animal and that his mother was a dealer, either Ma and Pa Palin knew and didn't care, or they had their heads in the sand. If I'd gotten involved with a guy like that while I was in high school, my parents would have escorted me to school eavery morning and been waiting there to pick me up immediately when classes let out, and kept me under close supervision 24/7. They would also have talked to the school officials and made sure I wasn't in any classes with the scummy boy, and if at all possible, would have gotten me out of the school and sent me elsewhere (as the Palins apparently did with their eldest son, who from all reports was pretty much the same sort of young man as Levi).

Who knows if they have one parent on duty now. Sarah is running all over the country, and last I heard Todd was still away fishing or oil-fielding much of the time. For her resignation speech, he’d just flown in a few hours earlier from one of these gigs to be there for the media show. And this is what was going on while Bristol was getting pregnant. Sarah, while serving as governor and travelling to events out of state, didn’t even tell Todd for two weeks that the baby she was carrying had been diagnosed with Down Syndrome, because she was waiting for him to get back from the oil fields. Who the h*!! was watching their passel of children/teens?

I know the laws, but the law and practical reality are two different things. Father who aren’t paying tend to make themselves scarce. And if they’ve been ordered by a court to make payments and simply refuse, they can end up in jail, and I don’t think courts generally order custodial mothers to bring their kids to visit their deadbeat dads in jail.

You think “inattention” causes pregnancy? Wow.

I believe he left his oil field position last year, and if he’s with the kids full time that’s a good to me as any male pol has with his wife. I also don’t condemn anyone who isn’t a full-time stay-at-home mom. And I don’t judge those families who appear perfect outwardly over those who let some imperfections spill out. (Too perfect an outward appearance is often a locked-down cover-up for repressed family problems.)

But all that said, I really don’t get the hauling Bristol out and making a celebrity of contrition of her. That makes me very uncomfortable.

Yeah, and parading visibly pregnant Bristol AND Levi across the stage at the Republican Convention was downright disgusting.

I agree. I was surprised she did it - a huge mistake. She should have asked for privacy for her daughter and kept her at home. Who wants a Levi Johnson hanging around the White House?

It doesn’t matter if you take them to school or pick them up. If kids want to see someone, they’re going to find a way to do it regardless of how much you stand over them. I know nothing of Levi’s drug use, but, what I do know from raising 4 kids is that the more you forbid them to see someone, the more they’ll want to see that person.

So, your argument blaming the parents if futile. Bristol knew better, but, like so many other young people, gave into the temptation.

Yes, the courts can order payment and go to jail. What I was saying is that Bristol can’t stop him from seeing the child even if he isn’t paying. I doubt she would take the child to see him in jail, but, that isn’t the point - she can’t withhold him seeing the baby now.

The Lefty’s at SFGate are defending Levi and trashing Bristol.

Go figure.

Liberal logic.

If Palin is elected President, I’m going to personally visit the offices of SFGate and laugh at each one of the idiots that work there, like Carla Marinucci, Joe Garafoli, Mark Morford and others who do nothing much more than reprint DNC talking points and they hate Sarah Palin with a passion.

Yeah, I’m going to personally rub their noses in it.

Yes because stay at home moms NEVER have daughters who have sex and get pregnant. *rolls eyes*

I was rather impressed at the amount of negative responses to my post. There was way too much guilt from working parents. I understand that many people think they have to have two incomes to support their families and that is too bad.

I agree that say stay at home parenting will not guarantee sex free teens. But these things start much earlier than 16 or 17. Those seeds are planted long ago when parents are not paying attention. If you don’t set good foundations for the kids then later when they should know better, they don’t.

I agree their are no guarantees in life, but I have yet to know a pregnant teen whose parents were emotionally there for them growing up. Kids perceive quite well when you have other priorities such as work or finding your next lover.

“Those seeds are planted long ago when parents are not paying attention.”

So true. As a parent of a 14 year old daughter I am trying to warn her of everything I know failed me in the past. Even though I have given her every piece of wisdom I can we encourage her to speak with her friends. Keep everything out in the open. Our only prayer is she uses good judgment. I told her in her short lifetime before she is 21, some of her friends will make devastating poor choices and have even told her to prepare for the possibility of losing a friend. They are not kind words but words of experience. This is all I have to give other than a mothers daily prayer.

We will always support her as long as we are alive. Thank you for your post.

“While I do not blame Sarah for it, my gut tells me she should have been at home taking care of her kids instead of running the state of Alaska.”

Yeah, let’s keep women barefoot and pregnant...to heck with Thatcher, Palin, Bachman, Blackburn...we dont need them. I’d suggest less gut think and more brain.

This will be one child support case where the media and the feminazis won’t care quite so much.

Do you two always blame the parents of the girl when teenagers have unsafe sex?

I have friends who are parents of a son who always send him out on a date with instructions, "Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth and fly shut." I'm not suggesting that that always works but parents of boys have responsibilties also.

When you have a boy you only have to worry about one "thing." When you have a girl you have to worry about everybody"s "thing."

If they had children at home then I do agree they should be there for them. That is defiantly the more important job.

Unless of course you don’t believe that motherhood is a very important job. On that note I would say dish the kids off to a minimum wage worker and pray for the best.

Yeah, your derelection of intelligence and common sense would guarantee that all people involved in politics would be single or married with no kids...lol.

“Brilliant, bumpkin”

I know that this is a “equal” world we live in. The guy is a complete dirt bag. OK does that help.

Girls have a greater burden when sex doesn’t turn out right. That is why I would put a greater stress on the fact that girls should not be out giving it up willy nilly. If you take out one side of the equation then the other side has nothing to do. It is also much more difficult to hold the boys accountable for anything which is too bad.

The ideal situation would have been for Bristol to give it up for adoption. So while we are pointing fingers I might as well point one more in her direction.

For the record I will never vote for Palin as pres. She is not worthy of the position and if you think others flip flop based on emotion wait till you see that weather vane in the wind.
