INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts Coach Jim Caldwell on Friday brushed aside comments from the New Orleans Saints camp about plans to intimidate quarterback Peyton Manning.

Caldwell responded to comments New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams made Thursday on a Tennessee radio station in which he said defenders will "have a couple of remember me shots" for Manning and that "if it happens, you hope that he doesn't get back up and play again."

"Comments that individuals make, we can't control that. They use whatever motivational tools they like to," Caldwell said. "I'm not going to pass judgment on anything he said. We're focusing on what we do and go from there."

I think that the Commissioner needs to step in with a threat like this from a defensive coach on a quarterback.

All it says is they don't think they can beat them strait up, and has to resort to hurting someone to win.

Is Buddy Ryan on the N.O. coaching staff?

Bounty Bowl II?

In watching the Vikings-Saints game, it was quite obvious the Saints took every shot at Favre they could.

I can’t imagine the Colts are unaware of that fact.

I was pulling for the Saints until I saw the cheap shots they took at Kurt Warner and Brett Favre. In the first game, I thought "the refs must have more lenient rules during the playoffs". After the game against Minnesota, I expected fines and possible suspensions, particularly since the Saints defensive coordinator had told the broadcasters that they were going after Favre.

I grew up rooting for the Saints, but no more!

Agreed.
It’s part of the game.
No quarterback should drop back thinking they’re untouchable.

Fortunately, Peyton Manning has PROVEN that he’s capable of taking a hit if he can’t outright avoid them. No pressure worries about the guy.

And, BRAVO to Favre.
He stood up there and took it like a man.
He may have have some bad years and self-inflicted PR disasters, but the Vikes would be thankful to get him for a second season.

“intimidate Peyton Manning” do football players really try to do that? This article is a waste of font.

This is akin to knowing a player had a healing knee and aiming for it.

I know QB’s need to take their licks, and I like how Warner and Favre took it with no complaints - but to wish a player does not get back up to play is pretty damn nasty. To say it is worse.

LOL - exactly...It's not like Williams's idea is all that original.

OF course they intimidate, but after the Vikings game it was obvious they were trying to take Favre out if they could and then he goes and announces he hopes they hurt Manning bad enough to take him out of the game.

Playing hard is one thing, a coach hoping to win by injury is another.

Why do players try to hit really hard? The threat of being hurt is intimidation. If a player is injured because of an illegal hit the offender should be removed and possibly sanctioned. To say you want to take a player out is perhaps un-PC but this is the essence of the game. You may not really want to hurt someone but you do not want them to know that.

I’m neither a Colts nor Saints fan, not even a Vikings or a Jets fan, but I have to say the Saints sure did take some cheap shots at ol Favre. I sure hope the NFL doesn’t allow the Saints to take their cheap shots early in the game, making it so Manning can’t even walk straight by the third qtr. Sure, I’d like to see them knock Manning down all afternoon long, but only within the rules.

And if this does begin to happen to Manning, then the Colts can reciprocate by having a "couple of remember me shots" for Drew Brees. And if that happens, then "the Colts can hope that he doesn't get back up and play again."

Just because it was a hard shot does not mean it was a cheap shot. The hit they called a personal foul was b.s! That’s a legal hit. There was no helmet to helmet contact and he was driven into the turf legally. I’m sure Favre is man enough to admit that.

As far as what Williams said, he was only verbalizing what every D coordinator in the league thinks.

For a conservative website that always decries politically correct speech and how soft the Left has made this society, some of you sure seem to be in favor of the pussification of the NFL.

I’m a Vikings fan (grew up there) but don’t really follow football unless someone I like is in the playoffs. I was really concerned when Favre was getting his leg looked at. I thought he would be either out of the game, or play more conservative.

He is one tough player! Later in the game he even tried diving on a loose ball!

I was trying to be a smart aleck. The Eagles in the late ‘80s under Buddy Ryan were accused of placing bounties on the “heads” of Cowboys.

The page has a banner citing that there is some unverified information, but it’s pretty much like I remember.

Even the NFL admitted that the double hit on Favre last week should have drawn a flag, as any knowlegeable fan knows. They played right on the ragged edge of dirty football and got away with it.

Sorry, no. The rules say that a defender must attempt to stop his momentum, but the player picked up Favre's legs and drove him into the turf. You can't possibly do that legally to a quarterback.

But it doesn't matter. We still lost.

A few trap blocks at knee level may slow em down. It’s worth a penalty to demobilize a head hunter. Crackbacks are fun.

Hits like that happen almost every week.
Hargrove had contact made as the ball left Favre’s hand. Aikman thought it was a good legal hit. On the high/low, Ayodele who was going high, clearly let up on the hit and could have clobbered him instead. McCray who ended up low on Favre was actually shoved down by a Viking o-lineman and trying to complete the play. Neither of these were late and both saw contact made within an eigth of a second after the ball left Favre’s hand.

Let’s not make this the ballet, please.

Eh, I was just making an observation. And, I’m a Viking’s fan.

The Saints knew they were overmatched defensively and played the only hand they had, which was to hit Favre as often as they could. I didn’t see the Saints do anything dirty, they were playing to win.

It’s playoff football and it isn’t for the weak of heart.
