Gee, the last time I checked, pneumonia and syphillus were bacterial infections. Why would the unknown author of this piece think an anti-viral would be effective against a bacterial infection?

Reread it. The reference was to the usefulness of antibiotics.

Pneumonia can be both viral or bacterial.
