OK. So which female artists NOT associated with duo, group etc would make your top 10. Here's mine..in no particular order
Shania Twain..Up isn't just a movie.
Bjork..ok, she was in the sugacubes, but did anyone listen then?
KD Lang..So what she's a Canadian lesbian.
PJ Harvey..Never heard of her..tough!
Alicia keys..Enough said.
Donna Summer..so to annoy everyone, here comes..
Barbara Streisand...One of the most underrated albums = WET
Edith Piaf...Oui?
Alanis Morissette
Sophie Milman
Emmylou Harris!
Neko Case!
KT Oslin
Celine Dion
Lady Gaga
Josephine Baker
Edith Piaf
Sarah Vaughan
Loreen McKennitt
Sade
Amy Grant
......Bjork, now I used to listen to her years ago
Janis Joplin
Dude — Alanis Morissette is intolerable. Bjork is almost as bad.
I don’t listen to that many female singers, now that I think of it — and most of them are rock singers (i.e. in a group). I’m with you on Shania Twain. I’d add Carrie Underwood. I like Avril Lavigne pretty well.
SnakeDoc
Sarah and Loreen are good calls. Too early to decide on Lady though
As far as vocals go, Karen Carpenter could out-sing anyone. I defy someone to find a better vocalist.
I assume this is limited to pop or rock? Otherwise, no top solo women list could be complete without Patsy Cline.
In fact, even if it’s limited to pop and rock, Patsy Cline still probably deserves to be on the list. Too much influence.
Patsy Cline.
100 percent agree, but i did ask no duos!
Keep smiling,
Philip
19 seconds.
Melissa Etheridge
Nana Mouskouri
Sissel Kyrkjebo
Kate Bush, good for you.
You have some good ones.
I would have Stevie Nicks on list, Chrissie Hynde and Natalie Merchant.
Bonnie Raitt
Ella Fitzgerald
Nancy Wilson
Delores O’Riordan
Natalie merchant
Janis Joplin
Margo Timmins
Tal Wilkenfeld
And Bonnie Raitt should be on that list too.
There it is...Nancy Wilson. Hard pressed to top that one!
Solo makes it challenging because so many of my favorites are only with a group. (several of these are both with a group and have solo projects).
Mariah Carey
Alecia Beth Moore (Pink)
Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin (Enya)
Sarah McLaughlin
Lita Ford
Floor Jansen
Tarja Turunen
Amanda Somerville
Lena Horne
Judy Garland
Patsy Cline
Lorretta Lynn
Janis Joplin
Judy Collins
Alison Krause
Linda Ronstadt
Lucinda Williams
Does Boy George count?
Janis Ian
Allison Krauss
Eleni Mandell
Adrienne Young
and additional votes for Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, Kate Bush
Ella Fitzgerald - Hands down the best!
Aretha Franklin
Ann Murray
Joan Baez (hate the politics/love the music)
Karen Carpenter
Joni Mitchell
Carla Thomas
Aimee Mann...if we can forget Bjork was in the Sugarcubes, we can forget that Aimee fronted ‘Til Tuesday
Though she did start with 10,000 Maniacs...she has had a great solo career.
I want to add Etta James to the list...
Diana Ross
Kate Smith
Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Etta James, Koko Taylor...
I like old school.
I would so much like to have added Tara!
Jane Olivor, particularily her 1977 release “Chasing Rainbows”..one of the top 5 (unknown) albums of the entire ‘70’s, in my opinion. Jane Olivor has one of the most beautiful voices on earth. (she has been described as an American Edith Piaf.) Her control and phrasing is breathtaking.
I still listen to this album at least twice each month..yes, sometimes more often. Even after some 33 years; “Chasing Rainbows” is still one of the finest albums that I’ve ever heard. It’s still in print too! Check out Amazon..
Eva Cassidy
I knew I shouldn’t have added Bjork :-)
Maureen McGovern
Cass Elliot
Anyone add Sade?
Great “get the babe in the mood” music. LOL.
Sarah Vaughn....the Divine
Peggy Lee.......Manana
Diane Krall.....Ms Coooool
Eartha Kitt.....exuded SEEEEX
Doris Day.......when she was with the Big Bands
Eydie Gorme.....when she was on her Latin Kick (Sabor a mi)
Barbara Cook....great in musicals
Nancy Wilson....met her once in Puerto Rico..que bella
Yma Sumac......not well known but what a set of pipes
Rosey Clooney..she could do anything... remember “commana my housa?
I’d put Streisand in for talent but any “artist” with God-given talents who thinks we care about their political
views is off my list.
I have never heard of her, BUT I will try to find some of her music..THX
I’ll add my vote for Karen Carpenter ... like hot silky chocolate over cold vanilla ice-cream ...
You left out Dinah Washington....
