Last night I got hit by a car and broke my knee
The Daily Caller ^ | February 4, 2010 | Jim Treacher

Posted on 02/04/2010 7:24:34 PM PST by Palladin

Last night I got hit by a car and broke my knee.

Sometime between 7 and 7:30, not long after I got home from work, I walked to the CVS on 22nd and M to get some bread, milk, and a SmartTrip card. I was right across the street from the CVS, and I waited for the crosswalk light to tell me to go before I crossed. I had plenty of time left, according to the countdown clock.

I was more than halfway there when a black SUV made an illegal left turn and hit me head-on. I absolutely had the right of way. I yelled something like, “Are you really doing this?” as it hit me before I could move.

I landed on my face on the street and smashed my glasses and scraped my hand and immediately I knew something was wrong with my left knee. I lay there screaming and cursing for I don’t know how long, and a crowd of people gathered and told me to hold still.

I was sprawled out right next to the yellow line as traffic went by. I gave one guy standing over me the number to the Daily Caller offices and he told them what happened. There’s a firehouse right across the street, so the paramedics were there in just a couple of minutes.

They took me to Georgetown Hospital, where I was soon joined by my friends and co-workers Moira Bagley, Tucker Carlson, Neil Patel, and Laura Baños. All of whom I love. Unironically. I was x-rayed and CAT-scanned and given pain medication and told that my knee was broken. I almost passed out twice from the pain.

They immobilized it, but if I tried to move it and didn’t get it exactly right, my whole leg tried to close up like a fist and I couldn’t get away from the pain. I’m typing this on Neil’s laptop on my chest on his fold-out bed in his basement and trying to move as little as possible. Now that I’ve written this out, maybe I can sleep. Sorry for the sloppiness, but I just wanted to get it out while it’s fresh in my mind.

One last thing: I’m told by multiple people that the SUV that hit me was Secret Service. If this is true, I want to know why that happened. I was crossing legally, and they just left me there. At the very least, I want an apology. What happened to me was wrong.

UPDATE 2:05pm:

The Daily Caller has been told by federal law enforcement sources that the Secret Service was not involved, and is working to confirm that driver of the vehicle which struck Jim Treacher was a State Department security employee.

UPDATE 6:44pm: Tucker and Jon are finding out more. Your tax dollars at work.

I don’t think that’s what he meant. He was on painkillers when he wrote this today.

What he probably meant was “It was coming straight at me.”

If it had hit him head on, he’d have more then a broken leg.

Still the laws of physics say he would have fallen on his back.

He obviously has very good friends who carried him there.

Friends who are kind enough to take care of him.

Conservative friends.

People who get hit by cars do not often follow the laws of physics.

That is excellent advice, esp. in big cities like NY and DC.

And why is he naming names but calling the so called offender a “black SUV”?

Its so incoherent.

"To paraphrase Bill Cosby; 'Forget the lights, watch the cars. Ain’t nobody ever been run over by a light.'”

I love Bill Cosby's humor and common sense, except you really don't want to forget about the lights or the cars. I usually check both ways after my light turns green if I'm the lead car cause every once in awhile there's that one person in the cross traffic doing 60 mph who thinks they can make it through the intersection before the light goes from yellow to red. And every once in awhile that person is driving a tractor-trailer.

Before I read the last paragraph about the Secret Service, I was jokingly going to ask if the Secret Service had been involved because Biden’s agents have already had two previous accidents, one which involved a fatality. What the hell is going on with these people?

Your story doesn’t make sense. The CVS is mid-block, so you couldn’t have been “right across the street”. There is a fire signal there, but that wouldn’t give you a “walk” sign. The only left anyone could take at 22 & M is if they were northbound on M and turned west on 22. If you were going to the store you would have had to have been facing the car that turned in front of (and hit) you. Didi you not see it? Or was it moving so quickly you weren’t able to get out of the way? How could the vehicle have accelerated from what must have been a stop so that you couldn’t avoid it? Not trying to be a prick - just curious.

Sheesh. Welcome to D.C., Treacher.

They immobilized it, but if I tried to move it and didn’t get it exactly right,

To my personal knowledge, Georgetown med students don't always provide the best care. Treacher should get to a good orthopedic surgeon ASAP.

For those who don't know, Treacher is a blogger who recently moved to D.C. to work on Tucker Carlson's blog.

This isn’t my story. It’s a guy who writes for a conservative website. His name is Jim Treacher. He wrote the report shortly after getting home from the hospital (and presumably while under the influence of strong painkillers.)He was tryin to get all the facts down as he remembered them (I guess for a lawsuit, which I think he has a chance of winning.)

There was a crowd of witnesses to the incident, so hopefully the truth will come out soon, and McGuinn’s insurance co. will pay for the kid’s hospital bills.

I don’t know why this government security worker thought he could walk away from this with no consequences.
