WRKO 680 Boston is apparently joining WABC New York and KABC Los Angeles in dropping Coast to Coast from its lineup, though apparently for a different reason. The NYC and LA stations are picking up the new Doug McIntyre show from Citadel while WRKO will be re-running Howie Carr from 1-5 am
And this latter case in Boston probably has to do with the fact that Clear Channel is launching a talk station in April on AM 1200, WXKS. Premiere radio syndicates Coast To Coast, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity--and Rush Limbaugh. No doubt Coast to Coast is heading there.
Premiere/Clear Channel supposedly has a contract with WRKO to run Rush till 2012 but who knows, that could end.
Howie Carr fans, you now have a second chance to catch him apparently (I think they did this before, re-running Howie in the wee wee hours)
From WRKO's schedule page:
Tuesday, February 9 12:00AM Jerry Doyle 1:00AM Howie Carr 5:00AM Wall Street Journal This Morning
“Premiere radio syndicates Coast To Coast, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity—and Rush Limbaugh.”
Hahahahaha...elections have consequences...thanks Scott Brown!
Howie Carr list ping. The Fried Clam Man is now also heard 1-5 am on WRKO (only on RKO, not on his other affiliates)
Re-runs of previous day’s show.
They did this several years ago too
Entercom Happens.
That reminds me! I still have 2 Howie podcasts to listen to.
WRKO fans, Reese Hopkins finally gets his day in court next Wednesday, February 17th. He turned down a plea bargain that would have gotten him released immediately as a felon and Sex Offender but turned it down. In retaliation, Asst. DA Rachel Ferrari sent him to the Gang Unit at Riker’s Island.
Premiere is thriving with these hosts while Air America is off the air (despite AAR’s Jon Sinton telling the Boston Globe on 3/31/05, “in five years we’ll be on 600 stations”
just like Rush...)
Don’t be too surprised if the libs try to knock down the cap on ownership. Clear Channel owns well over 1,000 stations I think, including more than a few that run conservative talk. Wouldn’t they like to limit ownership? (Key word: “Diversity”)
Even if he does get free I think he said he prob won’t do radio again but who knows. He says he has evidence he wasn’t in the state at the time of the alleged incident...
It was a weird co-incidence that right around the same time WRKO dumped Hopkins for salary cutbacks (replaced with Laura Ingraham, who’d been on WTKK before being edged out by other hosts), along came the arrest...
All Howie all the time, enough already!
Even if Rush stays at RKO till 2012, it’s in late 2012 that Howie’s contract is up. Maybe he can go to another station...
Who knows, some people who can’t hear Howie due to not being able to listen while at work, can hear him in re-runs overnights (think of the late shift workers too). That’s a key word: WORK. A lot of Howie listeners have jobs and aren’t layabouts on welfare, though he does have one guy in Hartford I think who’s a welfare layabout moonbat and calls up Howie to give him grief.
HC: “We can’t get together and have a big rally like the anti war people have done; we have other things to do like
GO TO WORK!”
WABC in New York dropped Coast to Coast, as well, and replaced it with Tom McIntyre or some such.
Coast to Coast was weird.
Doug McIntyre, who I think used to be based out of LA and has done some work at KABC before (think I heard him in for Hannity at some point?) Someone on FR ran a thread saying that they were disappointed that Coast to Coast was dropped in favor of the “RINO” McIntyre
A quick look at McIntyre’s entry on Wikipedia says that he used to do a KABC show called Red Eye Radio and that he was looking at the possibility of doing a similar show. Excerpt: “McIntyre identifies himself as a Republican, though his social views are less conservative than many of his talk radio colleagues (he supports gay marriage and legalizing marijuana, for example). “
Thanks for clearing that up!
I’ve listened to McIntyre, but I was still half asleep.
Ferrari already said she can’t win the case. The bank records, his work record from Power 93. Affidavits from landlords and real estate brokers in NYC and CT. All exonerate him. I’m amazed the case wasn’t thrown out. But in NYC all you need is a accusation. Also, the charge came after he started appearing on CNN on a regular basis. We think the girl and her mother thought he had money. He’s going back on the air if I have to drag him from station to station.
Nothing was discussed on Coast to Coast that couldn’t be solved by four meddling kids and a Great Dane in a van.
Betcha Art Bell's agent is kicking back with a smile and a very fine cigar while Premiere's offers keep growing ... and growing ... for Art to return full-time.
if you scan the AM band in the wee hours it is difficult to pick-up any program BUT Coast-to-Coast. It is probably past it’s saturation point.
There is also Phil Hendrie and his characters, etc. But add McIntyre (and Carr reruns in Boston) to the mix.
Citadel decided to stake out the 10 pm-1 am slot (ET) with a live show hosted by Curtis Sliwa but they eventually let Sliwa’s contract expire and replaced him with John Batchelor.
Now Citadel is going after the 1-5 am slot.
wmal has scaled it back during the week. It must be a money issue because C2C was the highest rated show for its slot.
ha; I did listen to a bit of the “predictions” show around New Years day. To hear some of the outlandish (or in some cases perhaps plausible?) predictions for 2010...and also a recitation of the predictions made for 2009 and how accurate or inaccurate they happened to be. Otherwise...
Satellite radio (XM) has a woman named Rollye James (who had done some CTC fill ins). She used to do a show on terrestrial radio (but is now totally satellite). Anyway, while her regular talk might not have been my cup of tea, she used to do “Friday Night Trivia” which was fun. A friend in Akron
OH would tape that for me off WHLO 640 I think...
Yeah, good; Again, I’m going by what he told the gossip gals at the Herald but as usual “...who knows...” (re: return to radio)
Coast to Coast has gone down hill since Art Bell left the show. George Noory is the perfect cure for insominia.
When Howie’s contract is up he will be out of there in a heart beat. That is, unless of course, that idiot Attorney that wrote his last contract wrote this one as well.
Why is RKO forcing Howie to stay yet decimating his resources? I really miss Happy’s sound effects. They were hilarious.
Happy’s sound effects, well some of them, can be heard on Michele McPhee’s show (”Happy, you rock!”) 6-10 pm on WTKK.\
Again that’s where he works these days and it’s why Howie says “Happy has gone to a better place” (...heaven? Yes, heaven on Morrissey Blvd., at the Greater Media building not far from the Globe-Democrat)
Great, now where do I go to hear the screams from Hell?
Thanks for the information. I still wonder why RKO doesn’t give Howie more resources. If they’re going to force him to stay, why not make him a little happier and improve the quality of the show at the same time.
Phil Hendrie's show is weird... I guess he is pretty talented with the voices and dialogue (with himself) but it got old after the first time I heard it.
Steve LeVeille is a great guy but those old lady callers and lack of any political discourse are sooooo boring. Larry Glick show it isn't.
Because of stipulations in his contract, Howie is a slave to WRKO. His only other option was to resign and not work for 5 years... :o( So he continues working on WRKO for big bucks (WRKO had to meet their competitions offer) but there is no love lost between them. He wants OUT and continually lets his audience know that he does not like being forced to work there by making remarks like "I cant wait to work for a REAL radio station"... etc.
And when he does do politics I think he leans left (Leveille). He has called himself a liberal at least
Well that is just mind boggling. Why force him to stay at all, only to try to destroy his show? Don’t RKO’s reputation and cash flow suffer also? [Sorry to appear so ignorant, but this has been bugging me for a long time. I am trying to get my brain around it, but it isn’t easy.]
Maybe stations miss the nightly Bush bashing?
CoastToCoastAM regularly features current events, legit scientists and experts on a variety of very interesting topics. Of course there is much paranormal stuff. I tune in every night.
George Noory turned C2C into a Bush derangement syndrome (BDS) hot spot, IMO all regular guest are critics of Bush and some hate him outright.
Noory would not allow regular guest Dr. Jerome Corsi, a critic of Bush policies, to talk about Corsi's critical look at Obama (Obama Nation) unless there were people there to refute the book. Bush bashers had no restrictions.
BUT last night -- Noory expressed concern about the czars.
Maybe he's having second thought about his adoration of Obama? If so does he have the courage to criticize a liberal black man? If he does criticize a liberal black man will more stations drop C2C?
Well, seeing that have his clothes and his golf clubs in my basement, I’m a better source.
Simple, close by, and live!
Once a year most indoor malls have something like HD-TVs-for-$100 sales that attract thousands and thousands.
The hell that you hear on that recording is just after the indoor mall's PA told the thousands and thousands still trying to get into stores that all specials are gone.
Howie wants out of WRKO because they hire CONVICTED FELLONS like Felon Finneran to be talk show hosts and to pontificate on issues from politics to MORALS! Imagine asking a known, convicted felon who was convicted of lying under oath to host a show for you IN SPITE OF OVERWHELMING OPPOSITION FROM THE LISTENING AUDIENCE! Thousands upon thousands of listeners contacted WRKO and its management voicing their opposition to having Felon Finneran host ANYTHING; the guy belongs in jail, but we are talking about Boston Massachusetts here.
When this happened, I believe this was the last straw for Howie and he wanted to leave WRKO but if he did WRKO would/will lose a massive amount of their listening audience so they prevented him from doing so. Like I said, Howie is their slave for 5 years but the day his 5 years is over he is G O N E and WRKO will sink like a stone in the 3 7pm time slot.
It’s a conspiracy I tell ya...!
Yes...as far as hiring convicted felons goes, WPRO has Buddy Cianci but I believe he’s still a beloved figure down there
For those unfamiliar, on this thread:
Howie let slip in July of 07 that he was moving to WTKK when his RKO contract ended. RKO went to court and he was stopped.
His “last” WRKO show was 9/19/07 and he was due to start on WTKK on Oct 1; the TKK website was re-designed and supposedly a Howie page (he was due to do AM drive) was part of it. Greater Media, WTKK’s owner, had “Carr candy bars” as giveaways (Howie has given these to people...and has worn a WTKK hat at public appearances!)
Howie did a TV interview with Ch 4 just as the change was about to happen but the judge ruled against him. He finally returned to WRKO around Nov of 07
Jason Wolfe of WEEI/WRKO/Entercom put money into the cash cow that is WEEI. They got the spiffy studios and Howie was left with the crappy ones. With CBS’ Sports Hub 98.5 as competition, WEEI does not want to be left behind. They even took back ALL of the Red Sox games, even though
WRKO promos still say “The Boston Red Sox are on WRKO”
Come 2012 (or earlier if Entercom goes bankrupt?) Howie could be at Boston Talks 96.9 or Clear Channel’s WXKS 1200
(I don’t know if CBS’ WBZ would want him)
Glenn Beck may be gone from WRKO, too; he is still listed on “Weekend Shows” but the lineup for next Sat lists “Rusty Humphries” in the Sat night slot that had been best of Beck
My sister went to one of those sales a few years ago.
She actually was standing in line at 4:00AM in the freezing cold. Egad.
Thank you for explaining in more detail. It still seems like RKO is cutting off their nose to spite their face, but worse management decisions have been made. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Howie confronted the lawyer who wrote such a contract. I hope RKO either decides to give him more support or else lets him go ahead of time. This is not the way a talented person should be forced to work.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Correction: have been informed KABC didn’t drop CTC, it’s been on KFI all along
Bill Cunningham gone too from WRKO? It says Bob Brinker on Sunday night
Sadly, WRKO will do neither, 1) they will NEVER let him out of his contract early... they need the money he brings in and 2) They will continue to rub Howies nose in it because they are ticked that he wants to bail from their onerous management and habitual hiring of felons to do their talk shows... Felon Finneran is a real life sleezy politician/convict and yet he has his own show giving advice and commentary on a daily basis... BLECH.
What a horrible horrible weekend line up, it just gets worse and worse.
