NEW YORK (Reuters) Tough fishing boat captain Phil Harris, whose brave exploits in the wild waters off the Alaskan coast were captured on the popular television show "Deadliest Catch," has died, family members said. He was 53.

A hard working, no nonsense, straight up, salt of the earth (sea in this case), self reliant man. A real American in every sense of the word.
I quit smoking after watching what he went through with those blood clots and whatnot last season. I’d imagine that I wasn’t alone in being freaked out by what he went through with smoking. I was as heavy a smoker as he was, and never thought I could quit. I’ve tried all the gimmicks, nicotine gum, smokeless cigs, nicotine patches, zyban, and even nicotine inhalers (Nicotrol) and simply couldn’t quit. I’d always taper down, and get it down to a few cigs or even one cig a day......but eventually the habit came back, slowly and surely. I realized the only way to quit was to go cold-turkey. I concluded every single cig you have, even while quitting simply continues to reinforce the habit. I was given a new prescription, from my doc this time, for my yearly attempt a quitting. He prescribed Chantix and I’ve read and heard almost all of the horror stories. I have not had any problems whatsoever with it. I feel that Chantix saved my life, or at least will let me extend my life by 10 years or so. It seemed to quiet that almost hunger-like craving I used to get for a cig after not having one for a while. Your mileage may vary, but it really helped me, and its been nearly a year now and my urges to smoke are virtually non-existent.
RIP Captain.
Loved how he got caught smoking in the hospital after the Doc told him he didn’t know if he would make it out. He was his own man.

Hey, thanks for the heads-up.....you’re right, he was a man’s man sporting some great ink! RIP......
Brutal nightmares (multiple times every night) and irateness didn’t do it for me. Glad you had a good experience.
I liked him in “Jungle Book”.
Prayers for his sons, the rest of his family, and friends.
Fair winds and following seas, Captain Phil.
That made it all the more tragic for me to see it happen again to such a glorious rogue as Capt. Phil Harris! Rest well, it is obvious to us you rode hard through your life and kept your individualist spirit to the end!
I am so sorry to read this. 53 is far too young to die. I just loved him on Deadliest Catch. My prayers go out to his family, especially his sons.
I was going to say the same thing. From one Sailor to another. Love the show and it’s not going to be the same without him at the helm. Hopefully his Family and Crew will be able to keep the business alive.
Fair Winds and Following Seas Skipper, the Man upstairs has the linehandlers standing by and the fenders out. Last port of call, and it’s the best one.
R.I.P.
This is one of only a few television shows I like. I don’t watch TV but I download the series from the Internet.
I told my wife even before the blood clot in the lungs event that he wasn’t going to last long. If nothing else, the guy looked horrible.
You can’t live sedentary, chain-smoking, stressed-out, with little sleep, sucking down Red Bulls (dangerous all by themselves) all day, every day, for very long.
No mere mortal can withstand this for long.
RIP Phil
Such a loss.
RIP Capt. Phil.

Met Phil when both of our ships were in the Lake Union Shipyard. Thought I was a 'Salty Dog' until then, I was just a "Sea Puppy" next to that man! The fortitude it took for him to go back to sea after the pulmonary blood clot left me speechless.
What a man!
Smooth sailin' and rest easy, Skipper!
Just damn....
Saw Phil get carted off at the end of tonight’s episode...
