Legendary actor Clint Eastwood has revealed that he has no regrets about turning down the role of James Bond, as he believes the 007 agent should be played by a British actor.

Buzz up!Eastwood, 79, who had been approached by Bond bosses after Sean Connery quit the franchise, insists that he made the right decision, as he did not want the surperspy to be portrayed by an American.

“I thought James Bond should be British. I am of British descent but by that same token, I thought that it should be more of the culture there and also, it was not my thing,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

Why did he make those spaghetti westerns? He wasn't Italian.

Good Call by Eastwood. We saw what happened when Kevin Costner played Robin Hood.

"...Clint Eastwood has revealed that he...believes the 007 agent should be played by a British actor."

Too bad Kevin Costner didn't feel the same way about the Prince of Thieves.

They we shot in Spain or Italy by Italian directors but it was supposed to be the SW or Mexico border areas. I really do not care for westerns but they were pretty good.

I dont think that Eastwood has the kind of acting talent to do foreign accents....

...any more than Sean Connery should have portrayed a Chicago/Irish cop in ‘the Untouchables’. the accent was truly awful...though the performance itself was pretty good.

that’s not very nice. Those Roger Moore movie problems were either John Glen’s or Richard Maibaum’s fault.

Ever since I saw “Gran Torino”, I have difficulty seeing him in some of his other roles...:)

Hey, any movie where his eyes bug out and he clenches his teeth while carrying a Garand has got my attention!

As for Bond...I must say, it looks like they have a Russian doing it now. LOL, Daniel Craig has always looked like a Eastern Block guy to me.

Yup. They were a little quirky but quite good. I also like Clint’s more northern SW films like high plains drifter, etc. One of them had the great Michael Moriarty. Clint’s westerns never had really a good guy like say John Wayne. It also protrayed life in SW back then as hard. I am sure it was very hard living.

Connery was good through Thunderball. After that he sleptwalked his through Goldfinger and You only Live Twice. He hated playing Bond and by Goldfinger you could tell.

But even with the bad accent, which most Americans wouldn’t know enough to distinguish, he was FANTASTIC in that role.

The bad-ness of the accent wasn’t widely known until a small contingent began publicizing it, but it failed to diminish the role.

He gets the character, and that’s how you make good 007.

Peter Lawford was actually the first choice to play Bond. He turned it down. No doubt the biggest mistake in his career.

Huge western fan here -- but despite not having a huge love for spaghetti westerns, I must say 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly' is my favorite western of all time. Eastwood was great but how fantastic was Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef?? I also thought "Duck You Sucker" aka "A Fistful of Dollars" was surprisingly good although I would have rather seen Eli Wallach in the role that Rod Steiger played. "For a Few Dollars More" was good too... maybe the spaghetti westerns that I like are all made by Sergio Leone come to think of it.

I'm glad Eastwood turned down the Bond movies... he is great in all the roles he played but I can't see him as Bond.

FYI, the remake of 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe was very good if you haven't seen it.

The premise was the setting was the American west. The reason they were called spaghetti westerns was because they were produced by an Italian ....in Spain .....

Apparently Richard Todd, who died recently, was also offered Bond in DR. NO but had a scheduling conflict. He would have made an interesting choice, Lawford not so much. But probably every Brit actor under 60 was considered for the role at one time or another.
