I am going to Hoenfels,Germany March 2nd-21st for training. I won't get much time off, maybe 1 weekend and a few nights, and I want to make the best of it. I am looking for some of the best brewpubs in the area and some heads-up info before I get there would be great. Thanks in advance for any help.
Drink the local draft beer.
nevermind the beer then, take time to look at some of the castles
dude, grab some beer and a good lookin fraulein THEN go look at castles
Just drink the local brew wherever you are. You can’t go
wrong in Bavaria.
In Germany, the best “brewpub” is right around the corner. Just look for it.

Say 'hello' to her for me.
Always choose the local draft. Stay away from Beck’s.
When I was stationed in Germany in 1970 the beer was just fantastic... REAL German beer. One big clay mug of “Dinkelaker” and I almost needed help back to the barracks.
Was in Germany a few months ago...German taste in beer has gone “lite”, more like American beer now.
If you order a pilsner don’t be surprised if it takes 15 minutes for the server to get back to you - they take a long time to pour properly.
I suggest ordering a pilsner anyway as well as ordering a hefeweizen and a dunkelsweizen. Observe how the bartender fills the glass by placing the glass over the bottle and inverting it and slowly drawing it out. Bartender will then roll the bottle on the counter and pour the remaining yeast in the glass.
As everyone else here says ‘go to the local pub with the local beers.’
MUNICH has the best beer in Dear Old Deutschland and the best looking women. Did you know the beer hall where Hitler planned the 1923 Putsch against the German Republic is still open? When I was there during the 1973 October Fest, a bunch of old Nazis were singing the top ten hits from the Third Reich, songs like “Marching on England” and several of us G.I.s were so drunk that we joined the sing along until we realized what we were singing :-)
The good old days in Germany - four marks to the dollar, cheap beer, cheap cars, and lots of long legged blond girls to chase.
Flippies - good old Lowenbrauerei Grafenwohr! A half dozen of them and you would be blind!
Spent time in both Hohenfels and Grafenwohr back in ‘66 to ‘68. I’m sure a lot has changed since then, but the local village breweries in both places were pretty good.
Our battalion reserved 3 mess halls; one for Battalion HQ, one for the line companies, and one as a mess/beer hall for evenings. Our battalion mail man was tasked with getting all the ‘goodies’ for the nightly fest. Boy, did he have a great job.
Aren’t we coming up on dark beer time?
“Did you know the beer hall where Hitler planned the 1923 Putsch against the German Republic is still open?”
Indeed, it is the Bürgerbräukeller, and was owned by Löwenbräu (I think) when I was there in the 1980s.
The IAF was training with the Americans in Germany, and as sort of a sick fascination we went there, in our IAF jump suits, about 3:00 in afternoon, mid-week.
There was some muttering and some people were a little spooked, but two older men walked up, shook our hands, saluted us (American salute), paid our bill and then emptied out the rest of their wallet cash to the server and left.
Have a picture of me next to the tuba statue.
One of the best kept secrets (in the United States, at least) is that German women are smokin’ hot. Put me in a room full of them, and I’ll attack Poland too.
Will-Bier in flippies was what we drank at the 14ACR
EM club/Downs Barracks in 1969.
You really can’t go wrong with any local draft.
I do think they come out in March, I hope to have some before I leave.
The ONLY reason I clicked on this thread was because I knew someone would post that pic. Thanks. It is my mission in life to find her.
Correcting my own post, the Bürgerbräukeller that exists now is not the original Bürgerbräukeller, but is right next door.
Unless things have changed dramatically, you’re not going anywhere except the on base club and even that may be off limits to visiting units.
Enjoy whatever beer (flippies!) you get. You’ll enjoy Dunkel if they still serve it.
Hohenfels isn’t exactly a tourist town.
Unless things have changed a bunch, you won’t be able to sample the local gasthauses but will be restricted to the training area. MWR does provide a bulk sales store for training units to set up their own little bars if they want, and there are, I think, 2 small clubs in the training area than cater to training troops. During my 11 years in the Army in Germany I had at least 12 rotations through there and only ever saw the town once, and that was because I was the only one in my unit who could speak German. It is the dirtiest, coldest, hottest, dryest, wettest, most desolate place on the planet. I wish I could go with you tho.
But, as some of the others have said, you can’t go wrong no matter which beer you choose. If you can get “Kulmbacher Reichelbrau” that would be a great choice, or the “Kulmbacher Hell” (Hell means light). I don’t recall that Hohenfels had a brewery, because it was such a small town. When Wildflecken closed down a lot of the training operations were moved there and to Graffenwaehr, so that might have changed. Hopefull you’ll be in a unit that can arrange some admin time and transportation so you can get off base and see a little of the country. Good luck to you and say Hey to the guys at the Sim Center
deutschland uber alles
In any case, have fun!
I was stationed at Wildflecken from 1984-1986. We used to go to the Kruezberg monastery for the monk’s beer. Awesome stuff, about 14% alcohol. 1 liter will do you.
Just about anywhere you go will be good. Do yourself a favor and get to Munich on a weekend and have a good meal at the Hofbrauhaus washed down with a few maas’ (liter mug) of their great beer. That place is a little slice of Oktoberfest.
A lot of great beer halls are within walking distance in Munich. Then there is the Andechs Monestary just outside Munich. You’ll need to eat a good meal there as well. It is a biblical experience.
I could go on for several pages but I’ll spare you. Have fun.
Would love to go to Czech Republic but we can’t leave the country according to our orders.
It is near Regenburg.

I know I am often guilty of black humour, but that just cracks me up. Well, I would bet that most of them old Nazis are dead by now.
That is a cool story my friend.
Kloster Andeches near the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is the best of the lot. It has 6-8 draught beers and others in bottles, all from the Andechs brewery. Remember you only get beer from one brewery in any location.
Munich to the south (Munchen) is far better. In order my 3 favorite are Augustiner am Dom near the Cathedral, Hofbrau about two blocks away, and Lowenbraukeller. I have not been to Augustinerbrau since it was bought a few years ago but have been told it's even better now.
I drink very little and rate these as fun places as much as for their beer but my drinking friends agree they are great. I am sure all can be found online before you go.
BTW you do NOT tip though you may give the waitress the small coins that round up to the next euro.
Please let us know how your trip goes.
1. Check with he old fogies right away. There is or was an active VFW post that operated out of a Gasthof in the nearby town of Parsberg. Good food, good beer, and if you go on VFW night, good company.
2. If you can get away for a weekend, take the train from Parsberg up to Nuremberg. Go into the old part of the city (you can easily see the old— 14th Century— wall and watchtowers from the train station, and it's an easy walk). There are a couple of neat little hotels right close there— my fave was the “Drei Raben” at Konigstrasse 63 (that's the address). From there it's another easy walk to the Hauptmarktplatz (main market square) with a neat little hole-in-the-wall bratwurst restaurant, also with good beer.
3. If you're stuck on post, the PX carried (probably still does) a selection of good German beers. There also is (or was) an on-post restaurant that catered to the local German workers, but was heavily patronized by the Americans. Don't remember the beer status— I went there for lunch only and drank Coke.
Enjoy your time in The Box, an have fun playing with the OPFOR— I was one of ‘em, at the time.
I was in the 54th En Bn, we used to have a battalion run from the kaserne all the way to the top. After everyone was up and accounted for there was a short ceremony then we were free to sit and drink for the rest of the day, there were duece-and-a-half shuttled up and back all afternoon to give rides back. After 2 big ones I never needed a truck, I just flew home. What a place that was!
It was pretty wild seeing the number of bicycles crashed off the side of the road to the monastery after they had a couple liters. BTW, I was the Chief of Ops of the training area.
Vetter tastes like rancid maple syrup!
Definitely not a refreshing drink.
Not sure about brewpub, but Erdinger and Spaten are excellent.
>Kulmbacher Reichelbrau
A local bar has started carrying that on tap, Cambridge MA, they also have Eku.
Amazing how much joy a good pils imparts.
