Sunday Morning Coming Down...my all time favorite by Mr. Cash...the man knew what he was singing about on this one...if you had been there you knew it and if you hadn’t, you knew you didn’t want to go.
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn’t leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don’t blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me “Sue.”
Well, he must o’ thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a’ lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I’d get red
And some guy’d laugh and I’d bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain’t easy for a boy named “Sue.”
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I’d roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I’d search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I’d stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me “Sue.”
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother’d had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: “My name is ‘Sue!’ How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!”
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a’ gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.
I tell ya, I’ve fought tougher men
But I really can’t remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin’ at me and I saw him smile.
And he said: “Son, this world is rough
And if a man’s gonna make it, he’s gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn’t be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you’d have to get tough or die
And it’s the name that helped to make you strong.”
He said: “Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn’t blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I’m the son-of-a-bitch that named you “Sue.’”
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I’m gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!
From just today...

Just because.
you don’t write and sing a song like Sunday Morning Coming down unless you been there. Among other things, that’s what made him a great man.
Lyrics written by the great Shel Siverstein.
Great post! My favorite Johnny cash tribute song:

parsy, who is holding a cigarette lighter in the air!
Cash’s performance is great, but Kris Kristofferson wrote it.
I keep this one on my profile page...

One of my favorites:
“Wanted Man”
[Written by Bob Dylan]
Wanted man in California,
Wanted man in Buffalo
Wanted man in Kansas City,
Wanted man in Ohio
Wanted man in Mississippi,
Wanted man in ol’ Cheyenne
Wherever you might look tonight you might see this wanted man
I might be in Colorado,
Or Georgia by the sea
Working for some man who may not know at all who I might be
If you ever see me coming and if you know who I am
Don’t you breathe it to nobody ‘cause you know I’m on the lamb
Wanted man by Lucy Watson,
Wanted man by Jeannie Brown
Wanted man by Nellie Johnson,
Wanted man in this next town
I’ve had all that I wanted of a lot of things I’ve had
And a lot more than I needed of some things that turned out bad
I got sidetracked in El Paso,
Stopped to get myself a map
Went the wrong way in Juarez with Juanita on my lap
Went to sleep in Shreveport,
Woke up in Abilene
Wonderin’ why I’m wanted at some town half way in between
Wanted man in Albuquerque,
Wanted man in Syracuse
Wanted man in Tallahassee,
Wanted man in Baton Rouge
There’s somebody set to grab me
Anywhere that I might be
And wherever you might look tonight
You might get a glimpse of me
Wanted man in California,
Wanted man in Buffalo
Wanted man in Kansas City,
Wanted man in Ohio
Wanted man in Mississippi,
Wanted man in ol’ Cheyenne
Wherever you might look tonight you might see this wanted man

Nearly seven years after his death, Johnny Cash is still making waves in the music industry.
It was his song, "Guess Things Happen that Way," that was Apple iTunes' 10 billionth song sold. The song was bought on Wednesday by 71-year-old Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Ga.
And in honor of Cash's birthday today, there's been an online movement supported by music producer Rick Rubin and the Cash family encouraging fans to wear black for the "Man in Black."
Cash also happens to have another CD coming out. "American VI: Ain't No Grave," will be released on Tuesday and will feature Cash's take on songs by Sheryl Crow and Kris Kristofferson among others.
Cash's long career brought him several times to the El Paso area for memorable concerts. His 1997 concert in Las Cruces was on one of his last tours before age and illness forced him off the road. The concert featured an eclectic mix of songs from "Ring of Honor" to Cash's take on Soundgarden's "Rusted Cage."
He was known for performing in prisons but Cash apparently only spent one night in a jail for a crime. He was arrested in October 1965 at the El Paso International Airport after U.S. Customs agents found hundreds of pep pills and tranquilizers in his luggage as he returned from a trip to Juarez.
Cash spent a night in the county jail and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count, for which he paid a $1000 fine and received a 30-day suspended sentence.
