LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Police Department apologized to the family of Robert F. Kennedy for exhibiting the tie, white shirt and black jacket the senator was wearing when he was assassinated in 1968.

After a complaint from the family, the LAPD removed the items from a display at a homicide investigators conference in Las Vegas.

"This is supposed to be a learning experience," Police Chief Charlie Beck told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It wasn't intended to cause anyone grief or to be prurient or salacious in any way."

Who owns the items now?

Do the police still hold it as “evidence”?

Do they normally exhibit “evidence” for fun?

They are part of history.

There is no one left alive that even MET him, much less to feel “grief.”

This was a bad, bad decision and sets a bad precedent.

“There is no one left alive that even MET him”

This might be hyperbole...

“Other items in the exhibit entitled “Behind the Scenes” included gloves and a knit cap from the O.J. Simpson murder trial and a rope tied around the neck of Sharon Tate and other weapons used when seven people were killed by the Manson family 40 years ago.

Debra Tate, the sister of Sharon Tate, said she and family members of other victims should have been notified in advance that evidence was going to be shown.”

Very few. He was born in 1925 so today he would be 85 and, as a Kennedy, probably dying from liver disease. That leaves a small number of people who would are old enough to be his contemporary.

He died in 1968, 42 years ago. So the number of people who might have known him when he and they were adults is still a very small number.

I doubt any in his family remember him personally.

I didn’t think she was still around — how old is she?

I have checked multiple sources, but this one had the best typeface: http://www.notablebiographies.com/Jo-Ki/Kennedy-Robert.html

They all say 1925 — but I may have leapt to early on my conclusion.

Considering the source, I said it's just another collision with facts.

*doh* — the WIDOW. That makes her 82?

80 is the new 40 — who knows.

But still, I think the items are part of history and part of the public domain. Mr. Kennedy gave up a lot of “privacy” options when he decided to enter the public eye.

IMHO.

I wonder if they will release the video/film of the reputed Hollywood orgy attended by some of the Manson family and some of the Manson victims. It reportedly has shots of Sammi Davis Jr. and Mamma Cass in it (and Sammi admits he joined the Church of Satan for the orgies).

He didn’t need to give up his tie. “evidence” goes back to the family. Unless there is going to be an appeal for Sirhan Sirhan. In which case the evidence belongs in the vault where it is not subject to possible contamination.

And, I've had a collision with grammar and spelling. That should be:

Considering the source, I'd say it's just another collision with facts.

If LA can't put them on display, they should sell them on Ebay. I sure some sick Kennedyphile would pay millions.

Pity the LAPD did not preserve the door frame in the pantry (the one with the bullet holes in it) as well as they looked after Kennedy’s clothes.

"and Sammi admits he joined the Church of Satan for the orgies"

So that was before or after he converted to Judaism in the mid-fifties? Perhaps he was a satanic-jew? I'm confused because the Manson thing happened in 1969 I believe, and Davis converted to Judaism in the mid-fifties so either he gave up Judaism and took up Satanism or what you wrote is complete and total bunk and you're probably citing some tabloid bs.

I seem to recall some sort of controversy about that when they sold the Ambassador... At least the door wouldn’t have been so personal (still struggling with that one).
