A Very Peculiar Sight

Posted on 03/09/2010 8:11:24 AM PST by Minn

While driving near downtown Minneapolis this morning, I saw what appeared to be a perfectly healthy young woman riding a bicycle in a normal fashion. On the bike were custom made racks constructed of vertical PVC pipe.

Stowed in these racks were crutches, These were the type of crutches with arm clasps, not armpit pads; the sad kind of crutches you might associate with a chronic muscle disease or orthopedic problem, not a broken leg. Can anybody think of a an explanation for a crutch rack on a bicycle?

She probably uses the crutch rack to hold her crutches. ;-)

There has to be a reasonable explanation. Maybe she has the muscle strength to bike in a low gear, but not to bear her weight. Maybe she’s accustomed to towing someone with such crutches in a wagon or something.

Severe ankle injuries could mean that someone needs to use crutches to walk efficiently. I have one bad ankle, and when it is sore I need crutches to travel anywhere quickly. On the other hand, bicycling is easy. If the bike breaks down, or when you can no longer ride it, the crutches are still needed.

The reason? A tremendous will to move forward in the glorious life that God provided. If this young person can ride a bike while still needing crutches it shows something very special about the true human spirit. My knee hurt while I was climbing some steps a few minutes ago and I thought, “what a plight to have my knees doing this at my young age.” I guess I need to take a que from your anecdote and toughen up.

If you have some leg strength, but back strength is gone, you can’t walk without assistance, even though the leg strength is there. You end up have to use canes or crutches. Bicycle provides leg exercise, keeping strength up, supports body on seat.

This is obviously a crutch delivery service called “Crutches in a Crunch”. When you absolutely, positively need a crutch to lean on, they deliver right to your door.

Is there any chance it was an electric bike?

"...Perhaps she works as a visiting nurse of some sort..."

That was similarly going to be my guess.
She may have been transporting the crutches for others to use.

No. And there was nothing unusual about her pedaling. She was thin and and appeared to be about 20.

Perhaps, but don't people with crutches have their own? Hard to picture the scenario where your nurse brings your crutches and then leaves with them.

Perhaps ongoing sessions of some sort?
Maybe the person is confined to bed or wheelchair until OT/PT person arrives?
Just taking crazy guesses with regard to this unique sight.

I’m guessing she is a scam artist going to beg on some busy street intersection. I once saw some guy pimp walking (think Richard Pryor sketch) down to an intersection, then once there start walking with a limp so bad that he was essentially dragging one leg, working his way up and down the line of cars waiting for the light to change. hilarious.

Maybe she is recovering from knee surgery. People usually only have one knee done at a time, but maybe she decided to bite the bullet and get it done all at one time. Her knees are still too weak to walk any distance but she can ride a bike without too much difficulty.

Don’t MS patients often have fits where they need assistance, and then other times they are fine? Just a guess.
