Looking for a good home defense shotgun. Do any Freepers have any experience with a Legacy Escort?

The Legacy Escort 12 ga. pump is on sale for $199 at a local store. Seems like a good deal.

Legacy seems to have a good rep with their rifles. Not familiar with their shotties.

I keep a Mossberg 20 inch pump with 8rnd capacity for HD.

I’d look for a good used Remington 870 first.

Sounds like it cost about the same as a Maverick 88. Same as a Mossberg 500 w/o the shine. Why be a test pilot? Mossberg is tried and true.

Hows your financial situation? an escort is made in Turkey Formerly known as Hatsan Escort.

I would spend 466 on a Remington 870 I think your life is worth some American made Steel.

The 12 has been going up in price recently. You can still find good 12’s at a decent price, but the 16’s and 20’s are climbing.

The original 28’s, fugeddaboutit.

+1 on Benelli.

I ran 1500 rounds through my Super Sport without cleaning before it bobbled on a 7/8th ounce reload in very cold weather.

Absolutely dependable.

I'm quite fond of my Mossberg 590A1 special purpose. Normally I prefer an 18.5" like the one your are considering, but 8+1 capacity with 4 stored in the buttstock and 4 in a side saddle is a hoot when you feel like throwing a large quantity of 00 buck down range.

Mossberg and Remington 870 are a good idea for experienced, get a double barrel for inexperienced with firearms.

Use #4 shot to prevent overpenetration of walls. I always advocate using a laser/light combo attachment for home defense firearms since break-ins can happen at night.

You can get a pump Remington or Mossberg for around $250-300 at a gun show. If you decide later to upgrade it would probably be easier to sell at a reasonable price. Mossberg drills and taps their receivers for optics, which is a plus for night-time HD.

Pump shotguns are usually reliable regardless.

Any 12 ga. shotgun will do. What ever you can get a good deal on. It's only going to take one shot to kill or send the culprit running and messing his pants.

I carried an Ithaca model 37 for 22 years, they’re rock solid and have one of the smoothest actions out there. They remind me of the old model 12 Winchesters for smooth actions and they can be carried by either a righty or a lefty due to they’re ejecting out the bottom.

I Would say the Remington or mossberg for economical guns and the Bennelli for high end.
The mossberg has an ambidextrous safety which makes it easier to run left handed if you need to.

Get one with a short barrell. Pistol or straight grip is your choice. The pistol grip would allow you to shoot around corners without exposing much of your body but it is hellish on recoil on your hand with heavy loads.

Don’t know anything about the Legacy. How about a shorter barrel for your 870? BTW - I have some Remingtons and got a short defense 870 model and works fine. One factor for me was having the safety and pump release switch in familiar spots.

Go to Wal Mart.
Buy a cheep Remington 870. Cheeper the better
Then go to Cheeper than dirt.
But an 18 inch barrel and a pistol grip.
Two screws, and you’ve got one hell of a home protection system.
I personally use slug, centurion, slug centurion in it.
Centurion is a large ball surrounded by eight smaller ones.
Devestating.
All ya gots to do is chamber a round and watch a bad guy freeze or crap.
If not, start firing.

Is that the Chinese shotgun imported by Century International? (The WASR people.)
I bought a Mossy `Maverick’ because the safety is on the trigger-guard and I can use the Advanced Technology topfolding stock with it.
But what I recall hearing of the Century gun was good

I've got a Beretta Silver Pidgeon 12 ga. pump that I never use and was thinking of cutting the barrel down to the minimum legal length and maybe replacing the stock with a pistol grip.

What are your thoughts on that? maybe not the pistol grip but perhaps something more tactical?

Its value isn't that good so I thought it would be a shotgun I could possibly customize.........

" It's only going to take one shot to kill or send the culprit running and messing his pants. "

Ahemcoughcough.

If you're on a budget, nothing too awful wrong with a used single-shot shotgun made by NEF et al. It goes blam, once, which is good. Very good, in fact. You can always buy a Remington later, then you have both.

Just sayin'.

What I’ve read so far is that it’s made in Turkey, on CNC machines, and imported by Legacy Sports. I have read some decent reviews on it. But at $199, it just seems to be a pretty good deal.

Plenty of good free advice on this thread except for one thing, not directed at anybody personally:

The old anecdote about racking a round into the chamber to make a criminal mess his pants is decidedly bad tactics. If he's a criminal, and the situation calls for you to use a gun, then you might oughta just shoot him.

THEN rack ANOTHER round into the chamber.

DON'T give him your position. An experienced criminal just might shoot you if you do that.

Model 37 Ithacas are great if you can find one that meets your needs. They are really cool in that you can hold down the trigger and they will shoot as fast as you can pump!

You better have a good grip and start low, cause they really climb with each shot.

That’s a deal no matter how you look at it. I paid less for the Maverick but since it’s for home defense I replaced the barrel with an 18 1/2” for about $89 from CTDirt, and the ATI folding stock for about $70.
It fits in my bass ukulele case!
