NORWALK, Calif. (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy who called 911 from a locked bathroom while armed robbers threatened his parents hugged and high-fived on Wednesday the sheriff's dispatcher who took his call.

The boy, identified only as Carlos, told reporters at a news conference that he remained calm during the ordeal because his mother used to make him practice dialing 911 in case of emergencies.

How did his mother say he did? "Excellent!" the second grader said. Carlos, sporting a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. baseball cap, gave a hug to dispatcher Monique Patino, who called the boy "my little hero." "I said he was very brave and I'm very proud of what he did," Patino said, occasionally dabbing tears from her cheek.

What an appalling sentence.

That's what I thought. The term "run on" does come to mind. Also: punctuation is our friend.

A 7-year-old boy, who called 911 from a locked bathroom while armed robbers threatened his parents, hugged and high-fived on Wednesday the sheriff's dispatcher who took his call.

Better, but still a mess.

Yep he is one amazing kid. He told the dispatcher to bring lots of cops and soldiers too. He is a hero. At the press conference today, he wanted to set the record straight about the screaming in the background, saying it was not him that was screaming, but his little sister.

The intruders allegedly threatened Carlos’ mom and dad but he grabbed his little sister and a phone, hid in the bathroom and called 911.

“There’s some guys,” he said. “They’re going to kill my mom and dad, can you come please. ... Can you come really fast? PLEASE, PLEASE.”

Los Angeles County sheriff’s dispatcher Monique Patino called in the cavalry, assuring Carlos the police were on their way.

He kept the phone line open even when the gunmen evidently discovered him and his sister.

But it turned out the gunmen had met their match. When Carlos bravely told them he had 911 on the line, the intruders fled. No one was hurt and nothing was stolen.

The Dispatcher’s Prayer

Dear Lord, help me keep safe those who depend on me. Give me
healthy ears, for they are my link with those who need me. Keep my
mind sharp and alert, my fingers quick and nimble. Grant that I never
forget how to do ten things at once, and do them all equally well.

Bless me with patience Lord. Patience to deal with the public, with the
officers, with the boss, and with everyone else who makes me want to
grit my teeth and yell.

Give me nerves of steel, that I may listen to a mother screaming for
her child to live, the man with a gun, or an officer yelling for backup,
and not give way to panic.

Grant me empathy, that I may help the battered wife, the rape victim,
the abused child, and not cause them more pain than they already have.

God, give me the ability to learn what I need, to remember it quickly,
and give me the wisdom to use the knowledge properly.

Bless my family Lord, for they will have to make sacrifices to shift
work, overtime, canceled plans, and times when I just can’t take on
one more thing. Help them understand the missed ball games, school
programs, and dinners for two.

Lord, give me courage. Courage to persevere when I feel
undervalued, unappreciated, overworked, and unrecognized. Courage
to keep trying when I feel in my heart it’s hopeless.

Last of all Lord, help me to never forget why I chose to do this job in
the first place, to never lose sight of what is important in the midst of
the stress. Help me to remember that I make a difference, however
small it may seem some days, and that I matter.

I am a dispatcher, Lord, grant me peace.

Nadine Clark

I heard the boy on the 911 tape, ask the dispatcher to send soldiers.

Got to love the kid. He knows who defends our nation.
