Teacher killed by wolves in Alaska, police say

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) – A schoolteacher found dead this week near a remote Alaska village was probably killed by wolves, Alaska State Troopers said on Thursday.

The fatal attack could be the first on U.S. soil in more than 50 years. Attacks by wild wolves, rather than wolves kept as pets, are extremely rare, numbering no more than a handful a decade, mostly in Canada and Russia.

Candice Berner, a 32-year-old teacher and avid jogger who traveled to several rural schools in Alaska, was found dead on Monday along a road near Chignik Lake, a Native Alutiiq village about 475 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Snowmobilers found her severely mauled body in a pool of blood and multiple wolf tracks in the snow, according to officials. The State Medical Examiner said the cause of death was "multiple injuries due to animal mauling."

Any good “wolf expert” will probably tell you that the wolves really didn’t mean to kill her. They probably just mistook her for a moose or a caribou.

Like this? "If Sarah hadn't shot so many moose and caribou, the wolves would have had more to eat and would not have been driven by hunger to attack that schoolteacher."

You never go out the door without your gun when you live in Alaska. Obviously this teacher either forgot that rule or just simply disregarded it.

A lot of the teachers in Bush Alaska are starry eyed people from the lesser 48 who learned all they need to know about wolves from Farley Mowat and are secure in the knowledge that there has NEVER been a documented wolf attack on a human in North America. [/sarc]

Now the wolf lovers will come up with all kinds of excuses for the wolf or wolves that killed her. Rabies, triggered the prey reflex, young/inexperienced, defending cubs, defending a kill, etc...anything to avoid the uncomfortable truth that with so many other situations we run into, we are afraid of wolves at an instinctual level and there is a reason for that instinct. Trust your instinct, not the wildlife biologost who has never run into wolves while walking home from school as a small kid, as I did.

My ancestors went to a lot of trouble getting rid of dangerous predators so their children could go outside and play without becoming somethings meal.

Now, Gaia worshiping misanthropes are bringing them back.

Here is a clue. Running makes Wolves and big Cats instincts to chase kid in.

So does standing there.

Not in a group and not with guns.

Honestly.. you go jogging alone in wolf country, unarmed. That’s probably not that smart.

My domesticated dog responds to running and fast actions.

I bet she was listening to an IPOD to boot.
Still a sad event.

I would rather see 100 dead wolves over one Human.

She was a tiny thing. That will also set off predator instincts.

These things are happening even in highly populated areas of CA with Cougars.

The only reason there are less incidents with wolves is they have been culled out further until about 20 years ago.

Then they started reintroducing them.

Wolves, Lower
R.E.M.

Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself, don't get caught
Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself, let others out
Wilder lower wolves. Here's a house to put wolves out the door
In a corner garden, wilder lower wolves
House in order, house in order, house in order, house in order
Down there they're rounding a posse to ride

(repeat chorus)

Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself, don't get caught
Suspicion yourself, suspicion ourselves, suspicion myself
Wilder lower wolves. Here's a house to put wolves out the door
In a corner garden, wilder lower wolves
House in order, house in order, house in order, house in order
Down there they're rounding a posse to ride

“Not in a group and not with guns.”

If they decide to take you it won’t matter the group size. Guns will allow you defend yourself but not whether the wolves attack.

It doesn’t matter that she was listening to an iPod, they would have taken her anyway. Wolves are predators who are dangerous to humans. They kill for food and for fun. The idiots who are introducing them should be the ones eaten alive.

This part of winter up here in Alaska is when the prey start thinning out or the snow makes it harder to hunt.

The key here is prey and predator, predators in the animal species care not nor know anything else but acquiring food, its all about easy food.It doesn’t matter what your religious or political beliefs are though they do often guide the imbeciles to their deaths when faced with a situation like this.

Again and again its those that have been book taught and internet ruled that venture forth into the wild with beliefs of immortality, beliefs that they have been blessed to be shielded from dangers.

Therein lies the difference of current society, the urban and rural opposites, and this is magnified by it happening in Alaska.

I have lived here since 1992, I get complacent sometimes but because I live away from the city I always have respect for the surrounding nature, I routinely have moose around my house, I know wolves can be in the woods and I have lost cats through the years from owls and eagles.

Its Alaska...a vast land that cannot be “liberalized” with sterile zones that have eradicated all threats to humans, not even in the largest city Anchorage that has bears and moose on its downtown streets, could a person imagine a roaming bear in San Fransisco? We see a bear in a parking lot we just avoid it, or a moose, but in the lower 48 they will bring out the National Guard, people will panic, everybody hides hoping that there will be somebody else to take care of the problem.

In Alaska...I would stay nearby until animal control came around with a large caliber pistol, and more than likely there would be at least a dozen other citizens armed, some with rifles. Not something you would see much in the lower 48. Its the worst thing that happens everyday here in Alaska, a dumb cheechako trying to play Alaskan, I feel terribly sorry it happened but it happens all the time...

People move here and then eventually find its too hard, or they manage to survive in Anchorage and think going to the bush its no different, WRONG...bigger difference on an unimaginative scale.

My advice for anyone ever thinking about moving to Alaska, be armed for bear, its a saying thats taken very seriously.

Alaska is a wild place but your opinion of the lower 48 is distorted.

She was a meal, that was enough to set off the predator.
