Giant owl escapes in England

LOWER STRATTON, England, - Authorities in southwest England are warning residents to be on the lookout for a giant owl that may be hungry enough to make a meal of their pet cat or dog.

The European eagle owl escaped Sunday from its enclosure in the back garden of a home in Lower Stratton, near Swindon, The Times of London Online reports.

"The owner went into the enclosure and the owl flew at him," says a spokeswoman for Wiltshire police.

The spokeswoman said the owl, which has a six-foot wingspan, is unlikely to attack humans because it was bred in captivity.

"But it could try to carry off a cat or small dog," she said. "If anyone spots the owl they should contact police and we will send an appropriate team."

my favorite bird....how big is a giant owl in the UK

in my 5 decades of hunting...i have never walked up on an owl who was not already looking at me...eerie

i found one just hit by a car undamaged a few years ago and a taxidermist friend of mine stuffed it for me...illegal of course but oh well...it’s a great piece...would be wonderful for an old gothic dining room

i every now and then think about donating it to the Belle Meade animal history museum at Percy Warner park

If you have starlings nesting in your clematis, put him out there and they will vanish like magic. I have a resin owl, filled with sand and he worked for me. ;)

Now all I have to worry about getting my little Boston Terrier are eagles, hawks and coyotes.....and I live in the city!

A pair of screech owls have been nesting each spring for the past several years in a wood duck house next to our garden pond - voila, the rabbit & squirrel population has decreased dramatically.

The spokeswoman said the owl... is unlikely to attack humans because it was bred in captivity

So in the wild these owls attack humans?

A few years back, I was outside our office for a smoke break, and actually saw a great horned owl swoop out of the trees behind our building, pluck a 2’-3’ snake out of the grass and disappear back into the woods. The whole process took at the very most, 10 seconds, but was one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen.

“Woodsy owl here with a message: Give a hoot, gimme your yummy pets!”
Remember folks, Owls aren’t “cute and cuddly”, They’re wild animals! This has been an important safety message from citizens for honest enviro ads.

I lived on a farm where there were some screech owls in the nearby woods. Always gave me a start when they’d start calling at night if I were out walking around. Talk about a spooky sound!

“If anyone spots the owl they should contact police and we will send an appropriate team.”

Of course, if it happens to be a spotted owl, then that would be redundant.
