As far as tailgate parties go, this one was a bit more swank than usual. Under purple tents, sommeliers from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly in Modesto poured their latest Pinot Noir while fans mingled and grooved to dance music. Guests were invited to play beanbag toss.
Thursday marked the first time the Golden State Warriors basketball team hosted an LGBT night - adding the gay community to its long roster of diversity-themed games that include everything from Bollywood dancing on Indian culture night to horn-blowing rabbis on Jewish heritage night.
"Generally in sports the gay issue is a touchy one, so this is extremely validating for us," said Stuart Leung, president of the San Francisco Gay Basketball Association, a league of eight teams that will use a portion of ticket sales to send players from their Rockdogs team to the Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, in July.
The Positive Resource Center in San Francisco, an HIV/AIDS service organization, also benefited from ticket sales.
Just before the start of Thursday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oakland-East Bay Gay Men's Chorus stood at halfcourt in tuxedos and sang the national anthem.
At halftime, the world's only gay-identified cheerleading team, Cheer SF, gave a high-octane performance, tossing male and female fliers into the air.
Although no public announcement was made during the game that it was LGBT appreciation night, the audience clapped enthusiastically for the performers.
Earlier in the day, members of the San Francisco Gay Basketball Association were invited to play a pickup game on the Warriors' court.

come out and pla-ay!
And while the Warriors were busy playing, Portland won the basketball game.
....uhhh, don't want to know about that....

And thus is born another awesome condescending euphemism for homosexuality.

“LGBT night - horn-blowing rabbis”
Now that would be a half-time show!
The sentences above make absolutely no sense. Well, the Warriors indeed suck. Apparently, many of last night's fans do too....
“Although no public announcement was made during the game that it was LGBT appreciation night, the audience clapped enthusiastically for the performers”.Heh Heh
Trust me if the Oaklanders had known they would have rioted..
Paints a picture, doesn’t it?
Everyone who doesn’t have a problem with this are absolutely sickening human beings. I feel bad for those Freepers who have to live around this.
No way..look at the Warriors record..they can’t swish...
No kidding. As one who has spent a lot of time in San Francisco, I wholly agree with you. Being a FReeper there would be akin to being an Israeli Jew living in a village of “Palestinians”.
They include gays with Indians and rabbis on diversity appreciation night. Indians and rabbis are part of American culture and society. Gays are a perversion of it. For the Warriors to include them in such events indicates managerial symapthy with gays, or a weakness to stand up to gay lobbies.
Gives new meaning to the terms “tail-gate” and “slam-dunk”.
Watch out for the BACK DOOR play! Damn, he BLEW the layup!
I wonder if,after they had gotten a little Pinot Noir into them, the participants in SF did a bit of "slam dunking" themselves.
I think that to lump Rabbis and Indians in with perverts shows, among other things, how much contempt they have for the non-prevert "honorees".
I hear they're REALLY good at that!
Had I seen this I suspect it would have been my cookies that *I* was tossing into the air.
Makes sense to me.Before the (presumably recent) dip in attendance they average about 700 empty seats a game. Now,with the dip, they average 1,700.
