Jene Newsome played by the rules as an Air Force sergeant: She never told anyone in the military she was a lesbian. The 28-year-old's honorable discharge under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy came only after police officers in Rapid City, S.D., saw an Iowa marriage certificate in her home and told the nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Newsome and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint against the western South Dakota police department, claiming the officers violated her privacy when they informed the military about her sexual orientation. The case also highlights concerns over the ability of third parties to "out" service members, especially as the Pentagon has started reviewing the 1993 "don't ask, don't tell" law.
"I played by 'don't ask, don't tell,'" Newsome told The Associated Press by telephone.

revoked her licker license?
From the story it seems the cops were way over the line on this one. Sounds like they were pissed they couldn’t make some other case and went after her in this fashion.
Wow—piercings, bodyfat issues, the whole works. Man, have standards slipped since my day.
I do feel sorry for her, and the police were dead wrong. She played by the rules and conducted herself honorably while in the service.
Now I don’t care who you are. That’s funny!
Yeah I agree. The police were over the top. They behaved like my 3yo. The military should not have even entertained the call from the cops.
Newsome was at work at the base at the time and refused to immediately come home and assist the officers in finding her partner, whom she married in Iowa - where gay marriage is legal - in October.I suspect her response to the cops trying to find her "wife" pissed them off sufficiently that they decided to go out of their way to screw her.
A homosexual marriage is a public declaration that violates “don’t ask don’t tell.”
IIRC spouses can’t be compelled to testify against one another does not cheesing to the cops come under this?
Ellsworth; one of the two homes of the B-1B bomber. Definately not a place for her.
Why were the cops in her home?
No, getting married to (or even attempting to marry) someone of the same sex is not playing by DADT. That's considered 'telling'.
The policy forbids homosexual behavior. I doubt she and her "wife" are celibate. Would you be as sympathetic with a polygamist "plural" marriage of a military member and two or more others?
Another poster mentioned this; when she married, she "told."
Think of those who "come out" as "gay" on their facebook or myspace pages. When it's discovered, they're SOL.
I B Violated, where my Obama money...
She probably has the money and on her way to Alaska to join her wifey.
They were NOT in the home. They merely read the certificate from a window. Yea they could read the dykes marriage license thru the window. Right.
Now This has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard of.
“Police officers, who said they spotted the marriage license on the kitchen table through a window of Newsome’s home, alerted the base police”
Why honorable? WHY HONORABLE????
“And most likely an Obama supporter as well.”
The odds are about 96% in your favor.
But who's this fella?
Actually, according to one study (repeated by Andrew Sullivan), McCain got the most lesbians voters for any Republican running for President.
Maybe Lesbians and African-american men do not get along.
That a guy dressed up like a sheila!
The police and the Air Force were completely out of line on this one. I’m cheering the ACLU on.
Does the military have a regulation
requiring enlisted / officers to declare
their marriage status / spouse.
It would seem to be a prudent rule
As spouses can be threatened and cause security risks
If third-party outing is permitted, I wonder how many gay servicemen and servicewomen have been subjected to blackmail.
Let’s hear the other side of the story, too.
In their sob stories about downtrodden gays, the media rarely explains why the laws were put into place. They fail to inform us why putting men (or female-craving lesbians) in women’s barracks is not a good idea. And why putting women (or homosexuals) in men’s barracks is not a good thing, either.
Bottom line — don’t put homosexuals in the close quarters of the military. No matter how many sob stories you hear.
Would you prefer that openly gay people be allowed to destroy the morale and discipline of the barracks?
How is this fat, pierced dyke an asset to the Air Force? We are in sorry ass shape if we need refuse like this.
Absolutely not, I think it would be a terrible idea. That was why I supported "Don't ask, don't tell." I thought the idea was that if individual gays never raised the subject of their sexuality, neither would the military. Apparently that is not the way it works.
I guess if we just ignored all criminal activity it will just go away or never effect the rest of society. /s
Repealing DADT and reverting to “ask, and if the asnwer is wrong, out the door” is what is needed.
Oh, it's going to be one of those threads.
Actually, for regular officers and enlisted , it was required to request permission to marry, at least in the 50;s and early 60s. I don;t know what the status is now.
Yes, one of those threads which support the rule of law and not ignoring perverted criminal behavior. If perverts want to ignore their criminal behavior, just like a murderer ignores his criminal behavior, they can still be hunted down and prosecuted for their criminal behavior.
The only thing sicker than their thinking is the inaction by those who condone and encourage their behavior as though it were an alternative mindset.
You’re reading more into this than you should.
If the officers attempting to serve the warrant had discovered that the woman had been married to a man serving in the military, would it have been OK for them to contact the husband’s superior for help in finding the fugitive?
Thank you. I’d glad that you think that allowing gays to openly serve in the military is a terrible idea.
But I fear that some will want to throw the baby out with the bathwater because of media sob stories like this.
This thread, and I’ll send you another one, will help.
How do we know she conducted herself honorably in the service? Have her records come available?
I do like the dynamics of this story though - a black lesbian living in South Dakota. Hollywood couldnt write that.
It wasnt a third party outing. If they were lesbians with no “marriage” and someone said she was gay, they would have to prove it.
Here, the license proves it. The license is what outed her, and it probably has her signature on it.
