Top 40 rejects: Why are none of these people in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
New York Daily News ^ | March 15, 2010 | Jim Farber

Another year, another reason to raise bloody hell over who didn't get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — and who did. Tonight, a fresh class of five historic names will march into the coveted main hall: ABBA, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, the Hollies and the Stooges.

I looked at the Top 40 rejects. There are some good ones that certainly should be ahead of “The Stooges”

1. Deep Purple - very influential band. And better than Black Sabbath, (already in)
2. Dire Straits - the last of great rock bands.
3. The Cars - even though I don’t like them, they started New Wave.

Missing from this list:
1. Little Feat
2. Ted Nugent

The editor of Rolling Stone Magazine, Jann Wenner essentially decides who gets into the R&R Hall of Frame. He's a giantic lefty and a real creep. Oh how I hate this man. He's one of the types from the 60's who politicized R&R and besides his taste is lousy. The fact that they are accepting the garbage rappers is testament to just what a lousy organization the R&R Hall of Fame is. Plus it was inevitable that there would be bubble acts that wouldn't get in and there would be big arguments just like there is in the MLB Hall of Fame and others. It's political with Wenner and he can keep people out who is dislikes unless it's a slam dunk. This is why Eric Clapton didn't like the R&R Hall of Fame even though he has been inducted 3 times, possibly a record. He decided it would be a big stink to fight the whole thing so he reluctantly gave in.

Yes, Alice deserves a spot for sure. My very first concert ever...(13 years old) was watching Alice from a blanket on the floor of the Long Island arena - Dead Babies, School’s Out...he had the big snake on stage - he was incredible. Blue Oyster Cult and Fleetwood Mac opened the show for him.

Because Jan Wenner hates them and he runs the Hall. The whole thing is Wenner’s baby, acts he likes are in, acts he doesn’t like but doesn’t hate get in eventually so he can pretend to be fair, acts he hates have to wait for him to die.

2112 is a classic. Probably their most classic. Its what made me take notice of Rush. Moving Pictures on, I lost interest.

Xanadu live is quintessential Neil Peart.

“Screamin’ Jay Hawkins”
Did you know he had 67 children? Wonder when he had any time to perform.

The Modern Lovers started new wave (out of a love of the Velvet Underground but not of heroin).

Members moved into other bands including the Cars.

Sex Pistols even covered “Road Runner”.

But the Stooges belong in the hall. Certainly more than the overhyped, White Panther loving MC5.

And neither Chic nor Abba belong in a “rock” hall, but that is my take.

I won't speak for all of these names, but there is absolutely no reason that the following should not be in the Hall of Fame:

The Cars
Joe Cocker
Deep Purple
Dire Straits
Procul Harum
Rush
Steppenwolf
Warren Zevon

Yep, rock “history” as written by Jan Wenner and Dick Clark is incredibly short sighted.

About as relevant as Little Steven lumping a lot of non-garge or even rock into his “Underground Garage” weekly playlist (Bruce Springsteen manages to get a play every week).

I’d be happier with all of them on your list over many names that are in the hall.

Somehow I left Alice Cooper off the list.

Benjamin Orr (co-lead vocalist of the Cars) was a terrific vocalist. It was painful to see his demise when he was stricken with pancreatic cancer. As a band, they were reluctant to be in the spotlight even in the early-to-mid 80s. Among others on that list I think should be honored are Judas Priest and Rush
