Skip to comments.Wal-Mart Paging Victims: "It Was Disgusting" (Police say its a hate crime)
Posted on 03/18/2010 12:52:44 AM PDT by jerry557
Two South Jersey Wal-Mart customers who heard a racist message broadcast over the store's public address system say the whole ordeal is no laughing matter.
Sheila Ellington and Virginia Tinsley were shopping inside the Washington Township Wal-Mart along Rt. 42 in Turnersville, N.J. just before 5 p.m. on Sunday when they say a man came over the PA system and said: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now."
"It was a disgusting comment," Ellington said. "Once I heard that, I was absolutely shocked and appalled."
The man was very calm when he broadcast the message, according to Tinsley.
"He said it as if he had a million dollars for us," the Washington Township resident said. "He wasn't nervous, [he was] really calm."
The women said the store's manager immediately addressed his shock about the incident to a large crowd of angry shoppers who gathered in the front of the store. He then made an apology over the intercom.
Tinsley said her husband then called 911 to report what had happened.
Washington Township Police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

Does this mean that "hate crime" laws are really a step toward criminalizing thought?
And while he had them on the line he let them know that Mickey D's got his order wrong last week too.
Umm...by boycotting the store, aren’t these two “ladies” accomplishing exactly what the announcer wanted?
"Would all white people please leave the store now."
I am betting on a disgruntled ex-employee. I think I have read that all Wal-Marts are set up on the same design. An ex-employee with a chip on his shoulder could very easily find a unwatched microphone for the time it takes to do something like this.
One of these days I will confess to my own misadventure with the 1MC mic when the silly Bosuns left it hanging on the portside quarterdeck...
"Would all white people please leave the store now."
He would get a 2 hour comedy special on HBO?
It’s not so much a hate crime as something akin to yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater, given the racially charged climate these days.
That’s probably more than likely who it was.
It’s an obvious prank. The guy who did it is probably not the least bit racist. He did it because he knew it would cause an uproar.
LOL Sounds about right.
“Tinsley said her husband then called 911 to report what had happened.”
This has SET UP written all over it....
Standard Radical Democrat M.O., create a “Racial” incident, then sue.
Shockingly. they didn’t find a noose this time!!!
Sounds like something along those lines, for sure. I'd be interested in a followup on this. Libs do this sort of thing, also. If you ever watch Washington Journal on cspan (i know, i know, most freepers don't) you'll notice libs pretending to be conservatives calling in on the Republican line saying stupid, exaggerated things they believe conservatives stand for. Whats funny to me is they seem to believe conservative listeners can't tell the difference.
I'm familiar with the program. I think C-Span continues these call-ins for laughs.
That could be it. What's for certain is that the management didn't do it.
What time is it in Tokyo right now?
Or someone who knows the store's page system phone number...
I hate this happened but at least it was in a “blue” state and not the south.
Wouldn’t be surprised if a black man made the annoucement?
I smell a lawsuit from the “offended ladies”.
1824 as I type this.

'In the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, the government attempts to control not only the speech and actions, but also the thoughts of its subjects, labeling disapproved thoughts with the term thoughtcrime or, in Newspeak, "crimethink".' __________________________________________________________
"Ayn Rand and George Orwell were not just ordinary novelists they were prophets who wrote in novel format."

It is extremely likely that you can page via a phone if you know the right extension to call. So all someone would have to do is know this and find an unwatched phone. In the store near me, that would be the one in Sporting Goods next to the ammo. Even if they have some, you can never find someone there to sell you any.
We had a new guy sitting at the DC desk in Central get a fire call. It seems he was Hispanic. The announcement over the 1MC went something like this "Fuego de la alfa de la clase del fuego del fuego del fuego". He got part of it right. He rang the fire bell in English. LOL All we knew was which end of the ship.
As for Walmart? Their PA's are as annoying as the devil. Generally they're set about half again as loud as they need to be. I hear them real well & I'm now half deaf. The ones in the Super Stores with no ceilings are worse. One things for certain everyone in the store likely heard the guy loud and clear.
BFD, get over it, face reality, there will always be racist comments. If you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen you don’t belong there.
I get so friggin tired of hearing blacks taking the pathetic victim/race card.Get a life.
Your point would be?
And, referring back to my original post about all Wal-Marts being set up pretty much the same, I would imagine the extension to call on the internal phone would be the same as well.
Unless there is some security camera footage somewhere, this guy got clean away.
So, how was hate involved. Hate requires severe anxiety and rancor.
This should be a case in conditioned responses.
Not saying it was right to happen but the reactions are out of all proportion. But then these people have been convinced over a lifetime that any mention of race is worse than murder or fire hence a 911 call.
Well, they checked all the cameras and could not find any white guy using the intercoms. Just minorities. Sure is a mystery. /yes that was
I would LOVE to hear a recording.
“Tinsley said her husband then called 911 to report what had happened. “
Cause obviously there was an emergency.
I’ve heard that most of those ‘cameras’ in Walmart are fake. Real cameras are too expensive.
It was a prank just like these:
SEIU is planting union thugs in jobs at Wal-Mart to disrupt stores in an attempt to get SEIU in control. Suggest Wal-Mart get some private detectives working after any such ‘incident’.
No, it would be construed as a slight against blacks.
Maybe if we dig a little deeper, you might find tht these “two ladies” were in on it, hoping for the big “cash in”.. just sayin....
A hate crime is expanded to include any time one of the "entitled" gets his feelings hurt.
You’d think he had said the n-word or something. “all blacks leave the store?” Sure, it’s annoying, but on the scale of racist statements, that has to be pretty darn low on the list.
Worse, the police, instead of warning them about abusing the 911 system for non-emergency calls, is actually investigating the “hate crime”, and takes this seriously.
It is hard to believe that there is a criminal law forbidding a customer from picking up a phone in the Walmart and making a stupid joke over the intercom. I suppose if he had said “there’s a fire, get out now” that would be a crime.
Or how to hit the button with “page” written under it on the phone.
They said the guy sounded like he was giving away money — I thought that was black code for “it has to be a white guy”.
Was that really a description of how his voice sounded, or is that just what the black people thought about when they heard the announcement -- "we'll win a million bucks in a lawsuit if we play this right".
"I need a bambulance!"
I didn’t know there was a following for walmart intercom pranking. I wonder if this one will show up on youTube. Probably not if they are threatening a hate crime prosecution, although watching someone make the announcement, and a film of all the outraged customers, would be hilarious. I’d probably watch a TV show that was just about outraging people and watching them go ballistic.
