The American Minute: Johnny Appleseed - Hero of the War of 1812 - Bible Student - Planter of Trees
The American Minute by William J Federer ^ | March 18, 2010 | William J Federer

American Minute for March 18th:

70-years-old, he visited his friend William Worth one evening, ate some milk and bread, read out loud from the Bible, laid down on the floor to sleep and never woke up.

This was how John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, died on MARCH 18, 1845.

Johnny Appleseed's father, Nathaniel, was a Minuteman who fought the British at Concord in 1775.

Johnny Appleseed collected seeds from apple cider presses in western Pennsylvania and planted nurseries from the Alleghenies to central Ohio, giving thousands of seedlings to westward bound pioneers.

He lived at harmony with Indians, bringing them medicinal plants.

During the War of 1812, Johnny Appleseed heard the British had incited an Indian attack, so he ran 30 miles from Mansfield to Mount Vernon, Ohio, to warn settlers.

Bare foot, wearing a mush pan over his eccentric long hair and an old coffee sack over his shoulders, Johnny Appleseed had a unique devotion to nature and the Bible.

He called an apple blossom a "living sermon from God" and often quoted the Sermon on the Mount.

Poet William Henry Venable wrote: "Remember Johnny Appleseed - All ye who love the apple - He served his kind by word and deed - In God's grand greenwood chapel."

Pinging you to today’s American Minute - this one about John Chapman - otherwise known as Johnny Appleseed.

I did not know he ran 30 miles to warn settlers of an impending Indian attack during the war of 1812! Nor did I know that his father was an American Minuteman during the Revolution!

Enjoy - ping others please - and let me know if you know of anyone who might want to be added to this ping list (or let me know if you want to be removed from it).

God bless and keep you and all our beloveds today!

“O, Shenandoah” Tennessee Ernie Ford:

(Just be it’s Tennessee Ernie)

From “Wonderful Town”

The musical Wonderful Town premiered in 1953 with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Leonard Bernstein. It is based on the play My Sister Eileen and follows the story of two Columbus, Ohio sisters, Ruth and Eileen, who come to New York City in search of love and fortune. In the song Ohio, Ruth and Eileen wonder why they ever left Ohio. The music is still copyrighted. Thus, we can only provide excerpts

Why, Oh why, Oh why, Oh ——
Why did I ever leave Ohio?
Why did I wander to find what lies yonder
When life was so cozy at home?

Wond’ring while I wander,
Why did I fly?
Why did I roam?
Oh, why Oh, why Oh
Did I leave Ohio?
Maybe I’d better go home.

O — H — I — O.

Maybe I’d better go home.

* * * * *

Wond’ring while we wander,
Why did we fly?
Why did we roam?
Oh, why Oh, why Oh
Did we leave Ohio?
Maybe we’d better go
Home.

O — H — I — O.

Maybe we’d better go home.

My granddaughter attends a private Christian school...history is actually taught there...the founding fathers....(you know, the stuff they leave off in public school)

She has learned the Johnny Appleseed song..(she's 5)...it's her favorite :))

"The Lord is good to me
..and so I thank the Lord
..for giving me, the things I need, the sun and the moon and the apple seed
..the Lord is good to me"...

Simple and direct!

I would enjoy being on your ping list.

Having grown up in central Ohio, I knew about Johnny Appleseed. We would always look at old apple trees and wonder if they were planted by him.

I didn’t know about him running 30 miles though.

Hi there - and I will be honored to add you to this ping list!!!

So, you know about Johnny Appleseed! I only knew about him because I vaguely remember there was a TV drama about him I think...that’s where I learned what little I knew about him. Now I want to learn more!

Yes he was a good man. Unorthodox in his appearance - but so what? LOL. He did amazing things...and he was a student of the Bible....as were so many of his day when they had so few other “distractions” such as we have today....

Oh, thank you so much for reminding me of that song!!!

Good heavens - I learned that so many years ago and had totally forgotten it.

Now I have to go find a link to post here that lets us hear the song sung!!! (or you can do this)

Thanks again!

(Are you on this ping list for this American Minute thread? If not, would you like to be?)

Oh wow - thank you for those links - and those lyrics.

I loved to listen to Tennesse Ernie Ford - when he has his TV program and since then. I owned one of his albums.

So this is a walk down memory lane in many ways.

Thanks again!

Where I grew up we had an old abandoned apple orchard that we used to play in. Spent many a day sitting in those trees eating sour green apples. We always wondered if they had been planted by Johnny Appleseed, since we knew he had come through central Ohio. However, since he died over a hundred years before I was born, it is doubtful.

8-)

Contrary to liberal propaganda, most Christians (including myself!) are Good Stewards of The Earth (God’s Creation).

This includes wise management of resources, kindness to Animals(Proverbs 12:7), Intelligent Farming methods, Eliminating waste properly (Read the entire Torah!) and planting new trees whenever one is cut down.

The foolishness comes when people worship the CREATION rather than the CREATOR.

It is not necessary to dance naked around the maypole and worship gaia to be a responsible steward of the earth. LOL.
