Obama’s SecEd manipulated school lists to favor powerful - (Chicago way)

Chicago Breaking News reported late last night that former Chicago schools chief and current Secretary of Education Arne Duncan manipulated a system to favor powerful political allies by placing their children in the schools of their choice.

The discovery of a list, the existence of which had been long denied by the city, and its composition of mainly high-powered political figures calls into question the appeals system used to reconsider applications that had been denied by the top Chicago-area schools:

While many Chicago parents took formal routes to land their children in the best schools, the well-connected also sought help through a shadowy appeals system created in recent years under former schools chief Arne Duncan.

Whispers have long swirled that some children get spots in the city’s premier schools based on whom their parents know. But a list maintained over several years in Duncan’s office and obtained by the Tribune lends further evidence to those charges. Duncan is now secretary of education under President Barack Obama. The log is a compilation of politicians and influential business people who interceded on behalf of children during Duncan’s tenure. It includes 25 aldermen, Mayor Richard Daley’s office, House Speaker Michael Madigan, his daughter Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, former White House social secretary Desiree Rogers and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun.

...This is bald corruption. Having a secret process that only the powerful know to get preferential treatment for their children is the antithesis of openness and transparency. It turned Chicago schools and their admission process from an open competition to another spoils process in the Chicago Machine.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports today that Scott’s body was found near the Chicago River early this morning:

Chicago School Board President Michael Scott had a gunshot wound to the left temple when authorities found his body in the Chicago River near the Merchandise Mart early this morning, sources said.

An autopsy will be performed later today to rule how Scott, 60, died. He was reported missing from his home in the Monroe police district on the Near West Side in Chicago Sunday, sources said.

....federal prosecutors issued a subpoena in late July to Chicago Public School Board President Michael Scott as part of an investigation to determine whether principals at the city’s nine highly-competitive high schools improperly selected students based on clout rather than academic achievement. Prosecutors are seeking all correspondence related to applicants who applied and were accepted, plus all related material including test scores and recommendations.

City school officials would not comment, nor would Justice Department officials in Chicago. Simpson says the findings will be of high interest to Chicago parents because of the intense competition that takes place each year to get into the best schools.

“If it’s a rigged system then … it means their child was denied the right to go to a good school. It really matters to them,” he says.

You can guarantee that the student loans will be handled this way. “Education is a right.” That means a government-given right and one that can be taken away or directed by government. What did Ayn Rand call it, The Tyranny of Pull?

Scott had been a utility infielder for several Chicago mayors, serving on various public boards. Mayor Daley appointed him President of the Chicago Board of Education in 2001. The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) run under the Mayor’s control, all 40,000 plus staff members, and over 400,000 students.

Arne Duncan’s job, before Obama appointed him the Secretary of Education, was CEO of the CPS.

The corruption on that scale will be far worse. There are whole demographics of 100K+ student loans - and millions of people who want to get out of them. A few thousand in bribe money for the government job to forgive the student loans ... lots of room for corruption.

We’re headed for a Soviet system.

The nomenklatura led a luxurious life, hidden away from the common laboring slugs.
