Middle-aged women need one hour of exercise

CHICAGO - Healthy middle-aged women in America will be hard pressed to get in the full hour of moderate exercise it will take to avoid gaining weight as they age, and it may be too challenging for some.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday found that middle-aged women need to get at least an hour a day of moderate exercise if they hope to ward off the creep of extra pounds that comes with aging.

"Time is a four-letter word," said Eva Lazarra, 48, a pharmacist at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, who was taking a break from work to lift weights at the facility's fitness center.

"In a realistic world of a working mom with a family, it can be difficult. I've done my best," said Lazarra. "I have done marathons. I have done triathlons. Unfortunately, we have to start looking at prevention, and that being part of our daily life."

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are already waging a war on childhood obesity. It may take a similar push in adults to help them avoid the health consequences of obesity such as heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.

I expect the exercise police will be another jobs program thanks to universal health care.

Not to worry. Soon the government will mandate that employer provide free gym time and memberships to their employees. The problem will be solved.

An hour a day? Does working full time and cooking, cleaning, food shopping and being a taxi count?

Just cut out sugar and processed carbs and the pounds will melt away. If it didn’t come from the earth or have a mother, don’t eat it, it’s not food!

sex counts... right?
for the husbands out there.. just a suggestion, be tactful about how you suggest this to your wife. saying “honey, you’re butt looks kinda big, you need and hour of exercise a day, let’s get in bed” is prolly not going to work.

Thought it was 30 minutes 3 x a week? Diet, metabolism and genetics all play a part. Reduce carbs and sweets, some increased activity and full amount of sleep.

Do vacuuming, mulching the yard, hauling laundry up and down steps, scraping paint and Olympic speed-shopping count as exercise? Damn right they do.

They said this morning that this is to keep from gaining weight as you age, the amount for cardiovascular health is still about 30 minutes 3 X per week. Truthfully, tho, you’re right, it depends on your genes and other things. Still, when I was younger and taught aerobics, I did an hour long class 3 to 5 times per week (along with chasing 3 small boys). I weighed 117 and had 17% body fat no matter what I ate (and believe me, I love food and I ate whatever I felt like). The SECOND I stopped exercising, I started putting on weight. I have lost it several times thru dieting, but it’s very difficult.

Not for me, I cut them out years ago...I haven't had sugar in at least 10 years...and I have gained weight in the last 5 years. I eat very little and we are on a heart healthy diet because of hubby's bypass a couple of years ago, no change since then. I only seem lose weight when I exercise, I lost 35 lbs. on my treadmill 3 years ago until my hip started acting up and they started injecting me full of steroids, I gained it all back. Right now I am under doctor's orders not to exercise...I am getting my hip replaced soon, it is so bad it "clicks" when I walk.

And since we will have an hour, we will be required to listen to government approved recordings - ‘educational’ material that will ‘help’ us develop the proper attitudes and beliefs....

Around my house, it's called maxipause and I believe that is the main culprit in my case.

Part of the stimulus funds are going to communities to fund anti-obesity groups. I read a story in the Arizona Daily Star about a grant for $20 million or so that is headed this way to help fight obesity. I can just imagine where the majority of that money will go.

Iwas recently adopted by an American Staffordshire. I take her for walks every morning so she doesn’t get too hyped. That’s my exercise and it works marvelously.

I’m no exercise nut.
But I suspect one hour of exercise is a good prescription for males
of all ages.

Including myself!

Why not hook up all of these bikes, treadmills, and elliptical trainers to pool their electricity? The exercise police could check to see that you've contributed your watt-hour quota.
