Were Russian security services behind the leak of 'Climategate' emails?

Suspicions were growing last night that Russian security services were behind the leaking of the notorious British ‘Climategate’ emails which threaten to undermine tomorrow’s Copenhagen global warming summit.

An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has discovered that the explosive hacked emails from the University of East Anglia were leaked via a small web server in the formerly closed city of Tomsk in Siberia.

The leaks scandal has left the scientific community in disarray after claims that key climate change data was manipulated in the run-up to the climate change summit of world leaders.

If the Ski’s released a thousand, if they stole them, they have a hole card of probably many more.

Because Russia wants to supply oil and gas to the world. Simple as that. They are about one thing today,,hard nosed business, and making money. It’s the USA that is getting wrapped up in socialist claptrap, and global warming.

The simple answer is that for them, being rich is more fun that screwing us. If you look at their every move currently, it’s ALWAYS something that strengthens their economy or national pride. They don’t care a whit if their moves hurt or help us economically, as long as it’s good for them.

Thats kinda good for us, and kinda bad.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and if the Russians are involved in exposing these frauds then they deserve our gratitude not our criticism.

Great quote. The money behind carbon credits makes health care dinero look like a school kid's lunch money in comparison.

The Russians? Nah! Read the emails and look at the datasets. These were collected by someone who either knew what to look for or were on the verge of complying with a FOIA request. And the selection of material wasn't accomplished overnight - it took time to get it all together.

The Russian involvement only came about because the first release was deleted. So the "perpetrator" had to use another available server on the Internet. By that time, people were already trawling the Internet for the data, so when posted on the Russian server, downloads took place quickly.

I have three separate sets myself.

You are right what is on the papers is what is most important.

But if the Russians are the hero's in this story.

THANK YOU RUSSIA!! or likely the KGB.

i only wish the Russians were a closer allies with us. we have the same enemies, there is very little reason we cannot today.

I cannot buy into this. It makes no sense why CRU would use some mail server outside it's immediate control (most probably a UNIX or Linux System within the University proper)to hold so much very sensitive information. Of what value would it be for NASA, HadCRU, and associates in general to use some foreign managed email server. It doesn't pass the smell test for me.
It was an inside job. Someone who knew the laws regarding holding back what should have been all along public information.
