(Houston) River Oaks apartment complex offers clothing-optional sundeck
KHOU Channel 11 Houston ^ | March 23, 2010 | Courtney Zubowski / 11 News

The competition to lease apartments is tough, and there are all kinds of incentives to get tenants... a River Oaks apartment complex is taking a different approach. Instead of giving you something, it’s offering to let you take something off.

The apartment complex is known as La Maison, and it's located in the 2700 block of Revere. Its French name isn’t the only European thing about it...

You see, on the La Maison sundeck, four stories high in the middle of Houston, clothing is optional.

It’s the first of its kind in Houston.

There were no takers Tuesday. For some, it was still a bit too chilly.

“I’m sure it will be a good place to hang out and get to know your neighbors,” said resident Jared Peterson. “All of your neighbors.”

According to the city attorney, there’s nothing in the deed restrictions that says you can’t have a clothing-optional sundeck at an apartment complex -- especially since many at the complex are on deck with the concept.

“It’s a value-added thing,” said resident John Harrington.

According to the experts, La Maison really isn’t doing anything differently than what previous local apartment developers have done. They’re offering an amenity trying to stay competitive in what is a soft apartment market.

“It’s just like restaurants, or bars, or clothing stores,” said Houston Apartment Association Vice President of Public Affairs Andy Teas. “You always want to find something to offer that your competitors don’t have."

But could the concept catch on at other area apartments?

“We see people coming up with all new ideas. We see valet trash pick-up, all kinds of on-site amenities for kids, “said Teas. “If people like it, we might see other people try it.”

Ever notice that most nudists are the people you would least like to see naked?

Houston is the fattest city in America. The most overweight. Which likely makes it the fattest city in the world. DON’T LOOK. AVERT YOUR GAZE. This is not a reason to buy at this location.

“Houston is the fattest city in America”

Relatively few overweight people in Houston. Chicago, on the other hand....or Buffalo.

I’ve been told that is what happen to Black’s Beach in San Diego. Them and the die-hard surfers.

Houston is the fattest city in America.

Largely due to the number of illegal aliens.

Overweight and probably older since they can afford to buy a condo. Eating burritos on the deck, nude with pasty skin and sexually transmissible diseases crawling and creeping over and inside their flabby white flesh.

The burritos sound good anyway.

About 10 years ago, I got a call from one of my favorite tenants (a 78 year old woman who had been in the building (a 6 plex) for years). She said that there was a young man sunbathing in the nude every day in the courtyard. I asked her how long he had been doing this...and she said about 2-3 weeks. I asked why she waited so long. She stated that "he was really good looking and at my age, that's all I'm getting" - LOL

I asked him to not do it anymore - which he did.

Actually the tally is a bogus statistic. It was generated by looking at the yellow pages and counting the number of fast food restaurants, health clubs, etc and factoring in the “proximity to mountains” in what is flat land.

Sorry my Texas patriot FRiend. Do a quick google and you will see, that sadly, the truly hideous weather in Houston, which discourages outside activity along with the absolute deliciousness of Texas food, has led to a situation most unfortunate for Houstonians — a tad few pounds. Like the most tad few anywhere on earth.

Certainly makes this last sentence seem odd:

“We see people coming up with all new ideas. We see valet trash pick-up, all kinds of on-site amenities for kids, “said Teas. “If people like it, we might see other people try it.”

If there are special amenities for kids (at other aparment complexes that might consider this distinction), what's to keep the kids from looking out the window?

Or are some apartments to be more "swinger" than others? Like Cosmo Kramer's "adults only" dentist?

Took the ex and kiddos to St. Maarten way back in 2002. Nude beach there was always a 10-1, old, fat and hideous to maybe one or two occasional lookers.
