PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Teams interested in acquiring Donovan McNabb(notes) will have to part with a high draft pick to get him.
A person familiar with trade discussions involving McNabb told the Associated Press the Philadelphia Eagles will only consider a deal for the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback if it includes a pick among the top 42 in next month’s NFL draft.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team doesn’t comment on potential trades.
After months of saying McNabb would return for another year, Eagles coach Andy Reid acknowledged Wednesday he was listening to offers for McNabb, Kevin Kolb(notes) and Michael Vick(notes).
Oakland, Buffalo and St. Louis are considered to be most interested in McNabb.
Each team has two picks in the top 42. It’s unlikely any of those teams would give up a first-round pick for McNabb. The Rams have the first overall selection, the Raiders pick eighth and the Bills are ninth. In the second round, however, the Rams have the 33rd pick, Raiders are 39th and Bills are 41st.
A rumored deal that would’ve sent McNabb to St. Louis for the 33rd pick and safety Oshiomoghe Atogwe was strongly denied by several Rams officials, including coach Steve Spagnuolo.
The Raiders are now considered the front-runner for McNabb if a deal is made.
It’s still possible the Eagles would accept a pick outside the top 42 if a team sweetened the offer with other picks and/or players. McNabb is expendable because he’s entering the final season of his contract and Kolb is considered the quarterback of the future. (excerpted)

It was bound to happen. Andy Reid’s gameplans are based on McNabb throwing the ball 50 times. When other QBs get behind center, Reid calls a balanced gameplan. It’s like their relationship has always been doomed to failure because of this. Sure McNabb does not help with his worm burners and inaccuracy. But one would think you’d try to mitigate his flaws versus forcing him to highlight them for the majority of the game.
I think both would benefit from being separated.

He might get to the Rams yet. The Rams signed Kyle Boller, castoff from the Ravens last year as backup but I checked he’s not on the roster at this time.
Great post to add a reference to the Joe Flacco “practicing” Youtube video. It runs about 37 seconds and it’s him hitting a skeet or trap with a football. That kids got a cannon and finally the Ravens got him some targets this offseason.
Good luck with that. At least I get the perverse satisfaction of knowing my wife’s brother-in-law will have another bad football season.
A lot of Cowboys fans were willing to see Romo go for similar reasons (big game choke). Difference is Romo is not 33 and entering the final year of his contract.
I've always been a McNabb fan, but even I see the value in moving him now while he still has some value.
As a quarterback, McNabb is in the area between serviceable and good. Good enough to win a lot of games for you, but lacking in that ability to put the team on his back and have post-season success. For the Eagles to expect that sort compensation from any team is laughable, given McNabb’s age and record with the Eagles. In McNabb’s defense, success as a QB in the NFL depends heavily on a great offensive line and a talented collection of receivers and running backs. In the end, though, it’s McNabb’s post-season failure that will greatly reduce his value on the open market of NFL trades and free agency.
It’s not fair, it’s the business of professional football.
I just watched and recorded the NFL Network abbreviated show of the Eagles-Patriots Super Bowl. The clock management during the last Eagles drive by McNabb and Reid was horrible for a regular game, so unheard of in a Super Bowl the announcers were having a cow. Brought back memories, because I was too. T.O. was none too happy with McNabb’s performance during the drive. I’m no TO fan but he was there, I was just watching on the boob tube.
Good luck with that, Andy, after McNabb’s final two games as an Eagle, both against the Cowboys, he managed one touchdown in eight quarters. Not the finest audition.
I agree with much of what you say, but a high-2nd round pick for a QB of McNabb's level doesn't strike me as too much, but we'll see. Consider the 'failure rate' of college QB's take with a similar pick (or even a 1st). With McNabb you know that you are getting a decent QB.
I would agree that McNabb has never had a credible running game. Who knows how good a runner Westbrook might have been in a more balanced offensive scheme?
I personally think that a WR's rep is to a large extent determined by the QB's ability to put the ball in the prefered spot consistently. McNabb's got a strong arm, but his accuracy ranges from 'good' to 'WTF?' depending on the game. I'm not sure better receivers are the answer with him.

That's my problem with him as well. Notwithstanding that he'll miss open receivers and throw into 2 and 3 coverage with the inevitable interception.
There have been many times I have to had walk away from watching an Eagles game because of his inconsistency. I was afraid I was going to throw something through my tv.
I would assume this means that Al Davis is giving up and admitting that Jamarcus Russell was yet another Raider’s First Pick First Round flop.
