American Minute for March 30th:
During the Civil War, after issuing his Emancipation Proclamation, President Abraham Lincoln set a National Day of Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer, MARCH 30, 1863, stating: "It is the duty of nations...to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins...with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy...The awful calamity of civil war...may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins."
Lincoln continued: "We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven...We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown.
But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious Hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own."
Lincoln concluded: "Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins and to pray for...forgiveness."

I really should write that down properly and keep it in my wallet. I had a note once and kept it in my wallet for years and years. I showed it to my dad once and he asked if he could have it. Years later he mentioned how he still had it in his wallet and looked at it from time to time.
My mom found it, still in his wallet, upon coming back from the hospital after he died. I’ll have to ask mom what she did with it.
I’m glad he doesn’t have to see this. He had a rough time watching the Carter years. And Johnson. And Kennedy. And especially FDR. (As a kid, I could never understand why he hated FDR and the Kennedys so much!)

Thanks! My Dad passed away years ago. About an hour before he died he said, with a smile on his face “Well, I’ve always said, the day I die will be the best day of my life, and finally get to be with Jesus!” I said “I know dad, but it sure will be a drag for the rest of us.” I hope I will have that peace of mind when its my time to go!
That is the one comfort of all of the turmoil in our country today. God is in control. It may be that God-fearing, patriotic Americans go the way of the Jews in Egypt or in Exile, but God IS in control. And at the end of the day (and my life), that is what matters.
In the meantime, if one believes, like I do, that the United States was ordained by God, I’ll do my best to help keep it under God’s favor.
