Is it really wise to own gold?
Vanity | March 31, 2010 | William of Barsoom

Is it really wise to own gold? The government has banned it twice before -- if I have my facts right. It could be simply confiscated or driven underground. It could become especially heavily taxed. These things could happen on very short notice -- "Stroke of the pen, Law of The Land... Kinda cool," as was said by R.E.

Kinda scary, too... That they think that fast and loose.

So, what about the probability of a general confiscation of gold precisely to prevent anybody from having a port in the storm, and forcing us all into a common and vulnerable boat?

I met a guy once who thought about this, and purchased many crates of bars of soap. He thought to use it as barter-money, "because people always want to be able to get clean." Soap is fungible. Each element of it is cheap, unlike a $1,000 coin -- where are you gonna "break" such a coin for a tank of gas? Ammo is fussy as a barter medium. Too many kinds. It seems to me that barter "money" ought to consist of cheap and universally useful "things."

Gold is a hedge, that’s all. Food, water, lead, etc will be the real currency.

That’s one of the reasons I like junk silver. It does get bulky though...

Junk silver is good. Much easier to buy that tank of gas.

It's worth keeping moderate amounts in very small unit sizes, so it can be used as a form of barter "currency" should it become necessary and so that it can be easily carried with you in the event you need to flee with nothing but what you can carry, and should be carefully stored away so that thieves - including Uncle Stealer hisself - cannot find it. Otherwise, it's not worth hoarding great quantities of bullion - unless, of course, you are personally wealthy enough and charismatic enough that you can command the loyalty of the armed mercenaries (for let's not get too coy about describing security guards) you'll need to protect it and yourself. Of course, if you're that wealthy already, you really don't need to be hoarding bullion in the first place, as you're unlikely to be at the whim, caprice, and "tender mercies" of the American Fascist Party, f/k/a the Democratic Party.

That’s why you buy it from private coin dealers and not online and with cash only. Big brother can’t take it if he doesn’t know you have it...and in any case, the day that big brother starts outright confiscating property is the day for Atlas to shrug.

As for the divisibility, my recommendation is to invest in silver and 1/10th ounce gold coins.

The only thing which is certain right now is uncertainty.

The economic storm which we are sailing into will be so terrible that none of us know what form of government [or societal organization] will emerge from it.

In the meantime:
1) Purchase as much ammunition as you can afford. [And then purchase some more.]

2) Homeschool your children.

3) Quit worrying about everything else. All the calories you are wasting [and all the sleep you are losing] right now in worrying about this stuff will be needed later, when the going gets really tough.
So make your preparations, then kick back, relax, get some sleep, and be tanned & rested & ready to rumble when the big fight arrives.

Food, water, lead, etc will be the real currency.

According to my wife's cousin who works for Blackwater and spent several years in Kosovo, in addition to what you list, reading material and toilet paper will also become common forms of currency.....
