Truman made racist comments in 1911, how awful. His actual record on civil rights as President is vastly more important. I am wary of condemning people for words spoken long ago that look bad by modern standards, even if they were Democrats. Washington owned slaves. Should we despise him, too?

I agree in principle, but the point of this post is to document that the long held characterization of the democrats as the champions of minorities is a joke. It accomplishes that.

"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs....There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."

Herein lie some more recent:

"These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don't move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there'll be no way of stopping them, we'll lose the filibuster and there'll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It'll be Reconstruction all over again."

--Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D., Texas), 1957

"I did not lie awake at night worrying about the problems of Negroes."

--Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, 1961

"I do not think it is an exaggeration at all to say to my friend from West Virginia [Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klan recruiter] that he would have been a great senator at any moment. . . . He would have been right during the great conflict of civil war in this nation."

--Sen. Christopher Dodd (D., Conn.), 2004

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African American [Barack Obama] who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice looking guy."

-- Sen. Joseph Biden Jr., (D., Del.), 2006-07

"I am a former Kleagle [recruiter] of the Ku Klux Klan in Raleigh County. The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia. It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the union."

-- Democrat Senator Robert Byrd

"Blacks are inferior to the whites in the endowments of both of body and mind."

-- Father of the Democrat party Thomas Jefferson

"White folks was in caves while we was building empires... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."

-- 'The Rev' Al Sharpton

"Jews, that's J-E-W-S"

-- Democratic state representative Bill McKinney on why his daughter Cynthia lost in 2002

"You f*cking Jew b@stard"

-- Democrat Mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin

Black people owned slaves too. During the War Between the States, the third largest holder of slaves in South Carolina was black former slave.

Should we despise blacks too? (rhetorical)

About the Jefferson quote, it’s a bit out of context. Remember, he was talking about backwoods tribesmen further beat down with slavery. After this and many other observations of the slaves, some of them positive, he says, “To justify a general conclusion, requires many observations ... where our conclusion would degrade a whole race of men from the rank in the scale of beings which their Creator may perhaps have given them.” He worries about being wrong in judgment of blacks.

Thank you for that. It is the truth that I wish to understand.

I know that the father of the Democrat party, Thomas Jefferson owned slaves; and that the father of the Republican party, Abraham Lincoln, freed slaves.

I am not a Republican, and have always considered Jefferson to be an exceptionally brilliant man. This country certainly owes much of its greatness to him.

EXCEPTION

That is their argument, and this argument of the Judge is the same old serpent that says you work and I eat, you toil and I will enjoy the fruits of it. Turn in whatever way you will---whether it come from the mouth of a King, an excuse for enslaving the people of his country, or from the mouth of men of one race as a reason for enslaving the men of another race, it is all the same old serpent, and I hold if that course of argumentation that is made for the purpose of convincing the public mind that we should not care about this, should be granted, it does not stop with the negro. I should like to know if taking this old Declaration of Independence, which declares that all men are equal upon principle and making exceptions to it where will it stop. If one man says it does not mean a negro, why not another say it does not mean some other man? If that declaration is not the truth, let us get the Statute book, in which we find it and tear it out!
Abraham Lincoln

“I hate white people, all of them. Every last iota of a cracker, I hate him. We didn’t come out here to play this game. There’s too much serious business going on in the black community to be out here sliding through South Street with white dirty cracker whore [ BLEEP ] on our arms. And we call ourselves black men with African garb on. What the hell is wrong with you, black man? You had a (unintelligible) with a white girl on your damn arm. You want freedom? You are going to have to kill some crackers. You might have to kill some of their babies.” — Democrat Malik Zulu Shabazz(Black Panther)

I thought he said that in his tremendous, best in history speech on race when he threw his preacher of 25 years under the ever more crowded bus.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.: Then-President George Herbert Walker Bush is “a racist.”

Sen. (then-candidate) Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.: Then-President George W. Bush “let people die on rooftops in New Orleans because they were poor and because they were black.”

Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y.: “George (W.) Bush is our Bull Connor,” referring to the racist Southern lawman who sicced dogs and turned water hoses on civil rights marchers. Of the GOP, Rangel said, “It’s not ‘sp—’ or ‘n-——’ anymore; they just say, ‘Let’s cut taxes.’”

Donna Brazile, Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign manager: The GOP has “a white-boy attitude,” which means the GOP “must exclude, denigrate and leave behind.”

Rep. (then-state Sen.) Diane Watson, D-Calif., on black affirmative action foe Ward Connerly: “He’s married to a white woman. He wants to be white. He wants a colorless society. He has no ethnic pride. He doesn’t want to be black.”

Then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.: In a speech in a black Baptist church, she said: “When you look at the way the (then-Republican-controlled) House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation. And you know what I’m talkin’ about.”

Director Spike Lee: Then-Sen. Trent Lott is a “card-carrying member” of the Ku Klux Klan; and about his dislike for interracial couples, Lee said, “I give interracial couples a look. Daggers. They get uncomfortable when they see me on the street.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton: Falsely accused an assistant district attorney of sexually assaulting a black teenager; called the Central Park Jogger “a whore”; called black then-New York Mayor David Dinkins a “n-—— whore”; denounced as “white interlopers” people wishing to do business in Harlem; and, during the deadly Crown Heights affair, said, “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson: Jews are “Hymies,” and New York is “Hymie-Town.” First he denied saying it. Then came an admission, after that an apology, followed by collective media amnesia.
