They grow big too. We have a few in the canals in our area. They also like worms. Lots of strange fish in these canals. My son in law filled a pail with exotic species and told me he had about $1,000 in tropical fish but he was going to release them because he couldn’t take them back on the plane. People get bored with their tropical aquariums and release them in the canals.

Mississippi mystery fish is a pacu
Star Tribune ^ | 8/10/02 | Doug Smith

The good news is that the unusual-looking fish caught recently in the Mississippi River near Wabasha wasn’t a flesh-eating South American piranha, as had been rumored.
The bad news is that it was a 7-pound red pacu, a second cousin to the piranha and a native to the Amazon basin.

Looks like it has lips too. I’ve never seen a fish with lips. And a tongue.
Very weird.

I am thinking that we all came from the sea at some point in time. All one needs to do is to look at early stage development of a human fetus and compare it to a tad pole or many other species. There was a good picture of this floating around here somewhere on the old Darwin threads.
To: JoeProBono
Thanks. That was very educational.

Just a observation regarding the fish man.
Why have a nose with no air hole....?
LOL
To: Cold Heat
I read in Science News a few years ago that the fetal pictures resembling a tadpole were fake. There is no tadpole-looking stage. Somebody who was a contemporary of Darwin’s was responsible for this deception. It has been removed from most science books, but the article said that some science book publishers have been bad about getting around to corrections like that.

MMMMM.....I think you are referring to some old drawings that were made into a pictograph. The newer ones are actual photographs. They still have a tail. Then it divides and becomes legs. We have a birth defect where this does not occur called the mermaid syndrome by some of the early doctors who first saw it presented..
I don't wish to pursue this beyond the point that I made about all life on earth coming from the sea.
For most people who study this, the human is included. I realize that some can't accept this, and that is fine with me. It does not matter as it is not likely important to most, but some need to know where we came from to better understand where we are going.

Aquatic ape.
You didn’t invent the theory.
Humans are the only primate species that doesn’t have a “hide” that can be pulled away from the body like you can with the hide on the back of a dog...ie the scruff of the neck.
Very few land mammals sweat like humans. Pigs, horses, elephants(maybe), tapirs(maybe), and humans. That’s about it. Hippos sweat but they are aquatic. Sweating is an aquatic mammal characteristic. So is subcutaneous, rubbery but not stretchy, blubber. Again, very few land mammals have this...horses(somewhat), pigs, tapirs, and humans.
Of the above, only humans and pigs(as far as I know) can’t “twitch” their hide to shake off insects.
