Seattle pit bull sniffs out narcotics and explosives at ferry lines
Examiner ^ | 3-28-2010 | Leslie Brown

Neville the pit bull has a job at the ferry lines in Seattle. He works at Seattle's Coleman Dock sniffing for narcotics, weapons and explosives.

Pit bulls, who still have a bad reputation, are really very affectionate and sweet dogs, and Neville is one of them. Previously held on death row in Canada, Neville ended up across the border in the K-9 work force. Today, for a dog that was almost euthanized, he's as loving as a dog can be. Neville was the first pit bull to sniff out explosives for the Washington State Patrol, which now has five pit bulls working narcotics or explosives. The success of these dogs has helped reverse the reputation of a breed known more to be fighters than crime fighters.

According to Trooper Dixon, it's not about the breed as much as it is about a dog's sniffing abilities and disposition. Neville has an expert nose that assists in the fight against any narcotics or explosives that arrive at the ferry dock. He also picks up on the characteristics of a dedicated officer and helps them do their job. rooper Dixon estimates that Neville does detection work on 150,000 vehicles a year.

After five years of service and exposing over 20 weapons or explosives, Neville is going to retire this September. He will stay with Trooper Dixon after his retirement.

And he manages to do this between maimings and killings.

That’s NOT what the article said! Please read it again. Pit Bulls ARE sweet dogs but unfortunately are trained to fight. When you read these “maiming” articles, you proablyl don’t have the full story - like the dog had been abused. Even common criminals have escaped capital punishment for having a previous life riddled with abuse. Your comments are without merit

If common criminals have escaped the death penalty because of a “previous life riddled with abuse” it is one of the reason there are so many common criminals abusing innocent (or not so) victims.

A person’s previous history should not prevent execution if the crime warrants it. And the death penalty is way under-used.

Mercy to the cruel is cruelty to the innocent.

If Neville sniffs anything suspicious, he tears the perp to bits. In a very gentle, kind, and loving manner, of course.

As a pit bull owner, I believe alot of attacks, of all breeds are the result of a lack of exercise. You can’t leave an animal with loads of excess energy in an apartment building with no outlet. Combine that with aggressiveness training and it is a recipe for a canine assault.

I should have used a sarc. tag. All the pitbulls I have known have been drooly, cuddly babies.

A travel trailer moved into a space at the mobile home park I stay at when doing field work. They had a big male pit bull they put in this small yard with a 2.5 foot chain-link fence and a dog house. After a while, they put a small just weaned pit bull female puppy in there with him. She was so small I was worried she would be trampled. After a few days they became inseparable and I watched as she lay down beside him and followed him around the very small pen. I walked over to the fence. The puppy was a little skittish, but the big male was so happy to see someone he eagerly wagged his tail. After letting him sniff the back of my hand (keeping it ready to quickly retract if necessary), I reached to pet him. He just loved a scratch around the ears and was anything but mean.

However, I was happy that they moved out after a couple of weeks; two pit bulls in a small enclosure with a short fence was asking for trouble, especially as the female grew older and went into heat.

A pit bull narc and explosives dog. Great idea, gotta love it! Down here in the SW and along the border, pit bulls are as ubiquitous as corner burrito stands. A trained one would have more than a small effect on those being sniffed. I see them standing in fear not of the agent but of the dog and eagerly giving up their backpack. And more than one would run to the nearest ACLU lawyer complaining of racial profiling and being terrorized!

Maybe the explosives had been soaked in human blood. Haha.

If you were to delve into the “rest of the story” concerning these pit bull attacks, I think youd discover they are not so lethal if they were raised with a normal family. I rented a room when I was in school from a family that had pitbulls who hunted wild boar in the Everglades. They kept them in the house, but God forbid they had contact with a stranger. They were trained to kill. They attacked a neighbor one day - they were those BAD pitbulls. Well, if they were trained to kill, what the h.ll would you expect. I think if you have dogs trained to be vicious, whatever the breed, you should have to be licensed and schooled on how to protect the public.

Oh I agree. My original post was sarcasm. I have been around pitbulls and never encountered a vicious one. And many times it is the owner’s failure to follow common sense safety rules that results in tragedy.
