Senior prom fell far short of the rite of passage Constance McMillen was hoping for when she began a legal battle to challenge a ban on same-sex dates.
The 18-year-old lesbian student said Tuesday she was one of only seven students to show up at a private event chaperoned by school officials last Friday night. She said the rest of her peers went to another private event where she wasn't invited.
"It was not the prom I imagined," she said Tuesday. "It really hurts my feelings. These are still people who I've gone through school with, even teachers who loved me before this all started. I've never been a bad student and I don't feel like I deserve to be put through this."
Her case drew a national spotlight after she and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged an Itawamba County School District rule that banned same-sex prom dates and a requirement that only male students wear tuxedos.
The ACLU sent a demand letter to Superintendent Teresa McNeece in February, saying the rules against same-sex prom dates and girls wearing tuxedos violated McMillen's constitutional rights. The district responded by withdrawing its sponsorship and canceling the April 2 event.
In an apparent compromise, school district officials said parents would organize a private event with school chaperones that McMillen could attend, tuxedo and all.
McMillen didn't take her girlfriend because the girl's parents wouldn't let her go to the event. McMillen escorted another female instead. She did, however, wear a black tuxedo with a blue green vest.
But when she, her date and a friend showed up at Fulton Country Club, only four other people were there. She left after half an hour.

Poor child. Confused, used, disoriented and in 20 years she'll look like Rosie O'Donnell.
Fat and ugly might have played a role
I am just overcome with sadness for this poor cow.
(snicker)
So what did your classmates ever do to justify your putting them through this?
bummer that.
She looks so sad, in both pictures.
It’s just temporary. A few Twinkies will make the hurt go away.
all that fuss for a half hour ?!?
Too bad Rachel Madcow was too busy associating all of brocko’s critics with Timothy McVeigh. Otherwise, she might have showed up to give this Mississippi girl some special comfort.
She wanted controversy to shamelessy gain the spotlight for herself and her cause - and normal people simply stayed away.
That’s really the best way to handle this.
Attention whore, pure and simple.
I second that. Didn’t she ruin having a normal prom?
A certain Kenyan and homosexuals are dangerous to society.
Looks like she had it at McDonalds.
Many years ago, my brother invited his buddy Jimmy to be his prom date because he didn’t have a girlfriend at the time and would rather hang out with Jimmy than some random chick for a date. They got denied entry at the door, dealt with it and moved on with their lives. It was one spoiled evening and didn’t make national headlines.
And yes, Jimmy wore a dress. A yellow one. It was hilarious!
I am literally laughing over this one.
The PC crowd have been well and truly outsmarted and without a tin pan to beat they are upset and a bit lost.
As predicted the prom that was, in the end, COURT ORDERED (how Orwellian is that?) was a complete and total bust because people made their own decisions not to attend.
But that’s not good enough for the militants who want acceptance and ‘tolerance’ at the point of a sword regardless of the issue at hand. In their little collectivist minds it’s not conceivable that other sentient human beings can make choices and plans that don’t involve them. The prom was held. It was a failure. Time to move on and quit this reverse witch hunt.
I’ve seen anecdote that would say you’re repeating yourself in giving his description...Larry Sinclair?
Good she learned a lesson now. In a non-socialist state, you can’t force people to support things they don’t agree with.
They won’t.
>>”It really hurts my feelings”
bummer that.<<
Yeah, none of us ever had hurt feelings in HS.
When I went to Grad Night at Disneyland in my Jr/Sr year (I graduated early), while we were on the bus on the way, my date told me she was meeting her boyfriend at Disneyland and essentially she used me to get the ticket.
My Grad Night pic was just me. OTOH, she was shunned for the rest of the school year (such as it was) when I told everyone on the bus what happened and the gossipnet took over.
I want reparations! My feelings were hurt!
I’m glad her grab for attention was ignored. I feel sorry for the other 99.9% of kids whose senior year was ruined because of this selfish little snot.
It’s all about you and your sex life dearie.
NOT!!!!!!!!!
I kept looking for the money quote: “It’s soooo UNFAIR!!!!”
In 20 years she'll probably be married (to a man) with children and making no plans to attend her high school reunion.
Lesbianism, for many young girls, is nothing more than a fad to get attention. "LTGs" we called them in college, Lesbians Till Graduation.
Spent a lot of time daydreaming catching a fish during English class.
Yes, she did.
And she’s got no one to blame but herself, her parents, and her friends at GSLEN.
What does she not understand about a private party paid for by the participating kid’s parents? There was a prom too that night but you see since showing up there wasn’t mandatory for the other kid’s yet they chose to go to a private party that same night.
Since when is going to a prom (or throwing one as this) a right? And how are they putting her through anything but choosing not to attend. I agree with a following poster. Ignore this tantrum, it’s the best way to end it. The media, I feel is only using her to push an agenda, otherwise she could cry and move on. Instead like a spoiled child who throws tantrums to get their way, she’s being fed attention that will only fuel this type of behavior.
I knew this would happen. She shoulda knowed better.
I think you nailed it!
I hate to use the word “selfish” as I have no problem with anyone pursuing enlightened self interest.
But this business of ruining everyone else’s good time to make a political point is kind of sickening.
Although ... we don’t know yet the full story about how the “straight” prom went.
Maybe they did manage to have a good time after all, especially as they had this deluded young woman as a laughingstock.
LOL, I merely meant people have said the Kenyan is a homosexual. I read an article the other day. Fishing is better than thinking of any of those things...
I run into this attitude all the time in online games.
Many people, particularly immature people, think that other people are there to provide them with help and attention. For what other reason could these people exist?
Thus, when they are ignored, or worse, openly scorned for their selfish demands, they become quite upset. Not in a “I’m selfish and I want my way” upset, but in a legitimate “I don’t understand why people don’t like me” upset.
It very sad, really. And it goes back to the teachings of adults in their lives that they are so special and so great that just being themselves will make everyone fawn over them.
She had her 15 minutes of fame before the dance apparently.
The best advice I can give her is to GROW UP!
Well ... Stir the Pot with the ACLU, you will get some ..ON YOU!!
You don't say.
Here lemme help you out. Here are a couple of gals of your persuation you can invite to your next party:

The Fat Slags
First rule of being an adult: Actions have consequences.
Maybe we're teaching our children to use the word "love" too often?
-PJ
she could have just showed up at the prom, but no, she announces it to the press and threatens a lawsuit when the school objects.
in my day, a lot of girls just went with their brothers...some because they didn’t have a date, others because their fiances were in Viet Nam fighting so they didn’t want another date.
me, I went bowling...but that’s another story.
She could have gone. Either gone ‘single’ and hooked up with her ‘girlfriend’ at the prom. She could have gone with a beard or a gay guy and then simply hung around with her ‘girlfriend’.
Nope she pushed it and got exactly what she wanted and deserved. Doesn’t always turn out the way you expect it to, honey.
But, but...she's Gay!
Correction:
In 20 years she’ll probably be married a suicidal man, with totally screwed up children like their mommy.
Awwww.
That’s where she broke it. Over her own desires, she pushed a traditional event into the realm of weird, court-ordered celebration.
Probably never had sex. (The lesbian experience is just foreplay)
I don’t thin it’s over. Something tells me Oprah or some other touchy-feely group will feel sorry for her and throw her a “prom of her dreams.” I hope not, but just sayin.
