Adobe: "Go Screw Yourself Apple"
Daily Tech ^ | Apr 9, 2010 | Brandon Hill

Posted on 04/09/2010 2:40:02 PM PDT by decimon

Friday's normally are pretty quite in the tech industry. However, for some reason, today has been particularly interesting -- especially on the Adobe front.

Earlier today, we posted a story which pointed out Adobe's fear of HTML5 gaining traction. In fact, one of the only reasons why HTML5 has even beginning a lot of attention these days is for two reasons; 1) Apple's iPhone OS-based devices don't support flash and 2) Apple is out to kill Flash.

>

Brimelow continues throughout the blog railing against Apple and its behavior with regards to Apple. However, he saves his most colorful language for Apple at the end of his piece.

"Now let me put aside my role as an official representative of Adobe for a moment as I would look to make it clear what is going through my mind at the moment. Go screw yourself Apple."

I should point out as well that I’ve been using Foxit since 2003 and never had any problems. Pages load much faster than Adobe - no nag screens, etc. And the viewer is totally free - just make sure that when you install that you UNCHECK the boxes asking you to make ask.com your main search provider and anything else they’re trying to pimp.

Friday's

NO!!! It's a plural not a possessive, it's "Fridays"

I have no use for anything Apple after I heard they are featuring an app that celebrates quotes from Che Guevara, yet are boycotting Glenn Beck for hate speech.

Adobe is the bad guy - Flash is the biggest memory hog in the known universe and it degrades the appearance and usability of almost every site where it is deployed. Apple is doing the right thing by taking a hard line, even if it is for self-interested reasons.

I use a free pdf writer and a free pdf reader.

Adobe had a nice run with their “proprietary” stranglehold on formats, but that’s not a guarantee.

It’s the same model that will fail Apple in the end - holding hardware hostage to proprietary/controlled software/content sales channel restraints.

1) Apple's iPhone OS-based devices don't support flash and 2) Apple is out to kill Flash.

1.2 billion Windows PC’s install base, over 300 million Windows PC’s sold every year and rising, the fast selling Android smart phones, RIM smart-phones etc all of which use Flash say “HELLO!”.
Apple's install base of mac's, iPods and iPhones is too tiny to affect Adobe in any way when there are over 1.2 billion Windows PC’s using Flash.
As for his rather colorful language about Apple, I second that. After Apple’s boycotting of Fox, I think they can go jump into a boiling volcano for all I care.
However, I think Adobe could face a serious threat from Microsoft's Silverlight.
With public setbacks behind it, Silverlight shines.

I’m not a big fan of either company, but Apple is far, far worse. Adobe has “sold” more Apple computers than Steve Jobs ever has and Apple/Jobs have far eclipsed the “evil”, three-lettered company that they derided in the infamous “1984” commerical.

P.S. in terms of “bloatware”, may I present, “iTunes” - if you look up bloatware in the dictionary, it’s pictured there, in a fold-out. It’s genuinely breathtaking in it’s resource demands and general unusability.

I’ve never been a fan of apple. Reminds me too much of the control freaks in DC. They have some good products and I’m typing this right on an iPhone but I assure you my next phone won’t be from apple and I’ll never buy such an over hyped product like an ipad.

I don’t like Flash either, but not allowing it cripples the internet. It will be a decade before HTML 5 becomes the standard in video, and until that time you can’t see video on the iPad etc.

That is what failed them in the beginning too when Microsoft sold the operating system on a floppy disk.

Worth repeating. Flash sucks and Apple will make it go away, in the same way it made floppy disks, 3.5” diskettes, and Zip drives go away. Thank you Apple.

I did too ... until Word 2007 turned a 6MB .doc into a 15MB .pdf this week (and PDF995 crunched it down to 1.5MB).

Macs support Flash. Android phones do not yet support Flash.

After Apple’s boycotting of Fox, I think they can go jump into a boiling volcano for all I care.

You thought this way before that happened, and technically they aren't boycotting Fox in any case.

HTML5 seems to be the big competitor, it is the one Apple is pushing. Companies are starting to convert to it so their content can be seen on iPhones and iPads.

Apple was the first to eliminate the drives and the naysayers said it was crazy, but Apple insisted that with the internet their was no longer any reason to have floppy drives of any sort. Just the facts. Review a bit of history and you might educate yourself.

Correction. Flash sucks on the Mac. Flash is lean and mean on Windows. Do me a favor and pull up Apple.com - now that is one MEMORY SUCKING, SLOW PIG. HTML5. Yeah, right.

Macs support Flash.

More reason why Flash will continue to do fine, despite Apple's iPhone boycott.
The macs don't matter much anyway. What really matters is the massive 1.2 billion Windows PC install base that uses Flash

Android phones do not yet support Flash”

They are working hard on it with Google right now even as we speak. Apple on the other hand, is flat out refusing Flash on iPhones.

You thought this way before that happened,

I was never fond of any Apple products before this Apple boycotting Fox nonsense, sure, but then I never suggested they go jump into a boiling volcano before. I am now.

technically they aren't boycotting Fox in any case.’

Yes they are.
From David Horowitz:
Apple promotes Marxist murderer’s rants while boycotting Fox News
http://www.newsrealblog.com/2010/04/07/apple-promotes-marxist-murderer%e2%80%99s-rants-while-boycotting-fox-news/

Apple is juuust fine with the racist, America-hating murderer Che Guevara. It's Fox news they are worried about.
What are you anyways? BJ “It's technically not sex” Clinton?

It was probably the increasing size of the applications that made floppy drives go away. I can remember installing a version of Borland C that must have come on 20 floppies.

Ummm..before you get carried away, you might want to have a look at this:

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=8&qptimeframe=M&qpsp=134

The iPhone has a "whopping" 0.51% of web traffic use. Apple will make Flash "go away"? Yeah like Haiti will make the Chinese economy "go away".

" in the same way it made floppy disks, 3.5” diskettes, and Zip drives go away."

Apple made floppies and zip drives go away like Apple made serial ports and parallel ports go away. In the real world, newer tecnologies simply made older technologies obsolete.

From your post, “Apple boycotting Fox nonsense”. They are not boycotting Fox, they do not have advertising on one member of the Fox family. Something that is entirely up to them. I highly doubt anyone would care if they chose not to advertise on the Fox broadcast channel, which many here have their problems with. Or FX.

They are boycotting Fix News, as my post # 28 made clear.
Apple promotes Marxist murderer’s rants while boycotting Fox News”

I don't care about 20th Century Fox Hollywood, which is liberal anyway. What I care about is Apple turning themselves into 0bamabot foot soldiers, by boycotting Fox News, the only conservative leaning TV network in the entire country, in a pathetic attempt to intimidate them from actively criticizing 0bama's Marxist agenda. It's not gonna work.

Google is on board and is converting Youtube from Flash to html5.

html5 will make Flash go away

Dream on.

Google is on board and is converting Youtube from Flash to html5.’

Google is irrelevant in desktop software. On the desktop. Windows rules. Flash is installed on 98% of all desktop computers. If anything, the main competition for Flash could come from Microsoft's Silverlight, which is rocking right now and taking names.
Meanwhile, Google is working with Adobe right now to bring Flash to Android smart phones, where Google's market share has been shooting up.

Adobe needs to start innovating instead of fighting evolutionary shift”

Adobe has been bringing great innovation to Flash for years.
