It was lovely weekend in Virginia so I drove up to DC and went to the American History Museum. Very special to see the recently restored Star Spangled Banner and the Lincoln artificats. The museum was busy as it was the last weekend of the Cherry Blossom Festival, although the flowers were gone. I was up on the 3rd floor and noticed a long line then I saw it was for the Pop Culture section; the most famous item being Dorothy's red shoes from the Wizard of Oz. I did not bother since I do not really care but I though it was a bit sad people would line up for that. Also, the Julia Child kitchen was popular. Probably making too much of this.
PS: If you are in the area, nice exhibit of 19th/early 20th century art at the National Gallery from the Dale Collection.
Yeah, you’re probably making too much of it.
Maybe is they drag ‘em in with the Ruby Slippers, they’ll stick around for something more substantive!
The funny thing is, I keep on making these day trips down to DC to protest, and I completely miss the museums! I have to combine a protest with a tourism trip, some day.
I love going to the museums and yes best deal in town as they are free, hee hee.
People love nostalgia. Nothing wrong with that. The Wizard of Oz is part of just about everyone's childhood.
Americans have a profound affection for nostalgia and collections.
While a lady with half a dozen ceramic unicorns is “cute”, a lady with two dozen seems to be a tad “eccentric”, but a lady with a thousand ceramic unicorns becomes “interesting”. This is because we admire her perseverance. Her eccentricity has made her an expert of sorts.

Here is a side loaded with such amusements. Taken individually, they are often downright silly. But as a group, they are not a bad reflection on us as a people. It shows that we are inquisitive, and willing to give the benefit of the doubt, or at least show a little respect, to the interests and efforts of our countrymen.
Eh — people like what they like. Even when there are serious matters to deal with one can only dedicate so much of his time to serious matters. I spend a bit of time here, and even I grow painfully tired of politics, history, etc.
Allow people the meaningless (in the larger sense) activities and interests that bring joy to their lives. “Pop Culture” passes the time and allows families to enjoy time together. Let freedom ring.

How about Archie Bunker’s chair?
Now THAT was cool.
I did stand in that line on the 3rd floor a few weeks ago...for Kermit the Frog.
