HOLYOKE – A Springfield man charged with statutory rape in the Phoebe Prince case was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol early Sunday.

Austin Renaud, 18, is scheduled to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court Tuesday on the charge.

According to police reports, an officer spotted Renaud’s vehicle stopped along Route 5 at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning with the hazard lights on. Renaud handed the officer his driver’s license without being asked and said he had a flat tire. The officer noticed that Renaud’s eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and that he had an odor of alcohol on his breath, the report states.

Renaud was taken to the Holyoke Police Station, where he failed a breathalyzer test, according to the report. He was released after paying $40 bail.

Renaud is one of six former South Hadley High School students who face criminal charges related to the treatment of Prince, an Irish immigrant who was a freshman at the high school when she hanged herself on Jan. 14. The Northwestern District Attorney’s office maintains that Prince committed suicide as the result of some three months of bullying and harassment at the school.

Three of the defendants, including Renaud, have been charged as adults and were arraigned in Hampshire Superior Court on April 6.

Sean Mulveyhill, 17, of South Hadley, was also charged with statutory rape as well as violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury, criminal harassment and disturbing a school assembly. Kayla Narey, 17, of South Hadley, also faces the civil rights violation, criminal harassment and disturbing a school assembly.

Three minors, Ashley Longe, Flannery Mullins and Sharon Velazquez, all 16, face a variety of charges in Juvenile Court.

Maybe he was drinking because he feels harrassed.

Maybe he thinks people should feel bad about that.

Maybe if he commits suicide people will be satisfied.

Scumsucker. Looks like he isn’t the type that can stay out of trouble. Let it all fall on his shoulders.

:He he really a bad seed and this is his criminal record just beginning?”

I think he’s on the slippery slope towards the life in prison that he deserves.
