PORTLAND, Ore. -- An Oregon jury's decision to award a man $18.5 million in punitive damages in his case against the Boy Scouts of America will likely be the first of many financial hits the Scouts will take as it prepares to defend itself against a series of sex abuse lawsuits.
The jury on Friday ordered the Scouts to make the payment to Kerry Lewis, the victim of sex abuse by a former assistant Scoutmaster in Portland in the early 1980s.
The case was the first of six filed against the Boy Scouts in the same court in Oregon, with at least one other separate case pending. If mediation fails to settle the other cases, they also could go to trial.

Could this be the end of BSA?
Ironic that the gay lobby would cheer the demise of Boy Scouts being bankrupted because of gay pedophiles.
Looks like evil has triumphed twice with this set of crimes: once when amoral perverts harmed children at BSA activities and again with immoral lawyers using that first crime to damage or destroy BSA. We can expect to continue facing this “diversity” agenda until we win or die, and BSA will face these lawsuits until we decide that it’s okay to send openly gay leaders camping with our children. I just pray that decent Americans will report for jury duty whenever summoned and never try to get out of it. Freedom is worth our time at home, just as it was worth our time in the military.
They will appeal & get 1.5 mil.
Yeah, what’s up? I thought gays and pedophiles had rights in this country. Maybe the BSA should take their sickos and put them in Obama’s “new” military where they’ll be safe and free from criticism. What a confused, clusterf*ck world this is.
The same people that legally prevent the BSA from kicking gays out, are the same people that cheer when the BSA gets sued out of existence.

Never mind that gays are far more likely to be child molesters than straight men.

The very same lawyers would be suing the Scouts on behalf of the Pedophile if they had “unfairly” refused to let him participate.

My spoiled, self-indulgent generation, the baby boomers, has caused most of this, not some communist conspiracy. It is just their way of rebelling against their parents, or their ghosts.
Meanwhile, no asking prospective scoutmasters about their sexual orientation; it’s discriminatory.
Not as long as strong people stand beside them.

I’m with you. It’s been painful to watch this constant and consistent attack against the BSA.
Alot of resources have and will now be wasted on fighting these lawsuits and the subsequent payouts.
Money that could’ve been used to strengthen the program.

I hope you’re correct, but even $1 is too much IMO.
The only option the BSA has right now is checking for criminal records. If the pedophile has never been caught and convicted, they will more than likely get through the vetting process.
I can only surmise that the records they kept were for comparing against adult leader apps to deny those apps when they came through because they didn’t have sufficient evidence to go to the LE’s.
Maybe that was their plan all along.
The gay lobby has been after the BSA for years because of the morally discriminatory position the BSA has taken against homosexuality.
No foxes(gay leaders) in the hen houses (scout units).
The faux moral outrage from the public about sexual abuse cases is sickening considering they turn around and essentially demand that the gays be allowed unfettered access to the children all in the name of “diversity” and “tolerance”.
Or they could just send the bill to the surpreme court and the ACLU.
