NASA's hotly-anticipated new space observatory has passed its most significant mission milestone yet a critical design review that sets the stage for a planned 2014 launch.
This means that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) a huge infrared telescope designed to peer farther back into the universe's history than ever before, has met all science and engineering requirements for its upcoming mission, NASA scientists said.

I assume this isn’t the balloon launched telescope from Australia because that NASA experiment failed miserably.

Did you see that video though? :)
Crushed that vehicle, people running for their lives.
Not the best NASA launch.

Yes, but that was NASA. NASA! Thank goodness it wasn’t live on all the networks. It might be embarrassing.

Can’t wait until we launch CAIR-1 into the Van Allen Belt.

Here’s that failed balloon launch video.

Just park your cars and ground suppport equipment exactly downwind from the launch point so the payload has a better chance at destroying things if the launch goes haywire.

NASA sent their B-Team to Australia, apparently.

I still remember when the Hubble was launched without a complete test of it's mirrors. This country lost years and $$ correcting the problem. I'm hoping history does not repeat itself with the James Webb (no relation).

Hopefully the testing will get fully funded on JWST. If they blow it on this one, it’s not built to be serviceable, and it’ll be waaay out there at the L2 point, where no manned system in service or planned can reach it.

Oh, wait, they’ll just use a robot, right? 8P
Maybe 3 of them. They can name the service robots Larry, Shemp, and Moe. One will have a ladder. :D
