Pop politics: Is Simon Cowell a conservative?
Washington Examiner ^ | Charlie Spiering

Posted on 05/05/2010 11:32:12 AM PDT by Michael.SF.

American Idol's Simon Cowell is now judging UK politics today as he endorsed David Cameron and the Tory party in advance of the upcoming election.

"I have always hated celebrities lecturing people on politics." he wrote in the Sun, "So forgive me. But I am passionate about this country."

Cowell suggested that government should "get right out of the way," of UK citizens who are trying to start their own business.

Right now it takes twice as long to start a business in the UK as it does in the USA. . . I believe everyone has the right to be heard and the right to make a better life for themselves. I have seen that the American Dream is a reality - and I would love to feel the British Dream is also a reality.

Similar thread posted earlier, but not this take from the Examiner.

Is Cowell a Conservative? Well he is rude, blunt, arrogant and wealthy, so in the libs mind, he must be.

Now if they had any evidence of racism, that would clinch it.

What’s conservative in the UK means something totally different here.

Seems like he is at least in that sense.

"What’s conservative in the UK means something totally different here."

Since the end of Thatcherism, conservatives in the UK have all but completely abandoned social conservatism and a desire for a smaller, less intrusive government. Most Tories today would be VERY comfortable with most of the American Democrat platform. The UK LibDems are communists, and Labour is just another word for pure socialism.

Well, he certainly doesn’t have the Lib tendency to tell everyone that they did a good job no matter how poorly they actually did. He doesn’t create a false notion that everyone is equally good or special to build their self-esteme. And I suspect he is for personal responsibility.

Is Cowell a Conservative?

Not enough information.

But from that one quote I would say he is a (small L) liberal.

Tomorrow, we’ll see which party and which candidate will rule over GB. I’d like to Beeotch slap both Liberal Big Governement cadidates, and wish luck to Mr. Cameron! Maybe not as conservative as a freeper - but a lot better than “Obama Jr” with the “liberal dem’s” over there and that Brown. ugh.

It’s been painful to watch what has happened in UK over the past 10+ years. Labour needs to go home.

((Now all they need is to outsource Geert Wilders to keep an eye on immigration. ;))

"And I suspect he is for personal responsibility"

If you read his entire statement, what's most surprising is that he uses the term "family values", and deeply laments the outbreak of knife violence in the UK, which he pins on decaying morality.

Another guy that has made some surprising comments about UK politics is Roger Waters. While Waters was and continues to be a harsh critic of military interventionism, he has also made some very pointed comments about the UK's recent bans on some hunting, Fox Hunting in particular and even multiculturalism.

It's clear that there are some in the UK media establishment that have taken all they can take with respect to the UK nanny state.

People watching Idol secretly loved Simon Cowell for speaking so bluntly to merit, for puncturing silly pretensions of ability based on thin air. He's a businessman and a wildly successful one, who knows what he knows extremely well and that is saleable music. He's taken that basic skill, parlayed it into one near empire, and then parlayed that into an entirely different medium.

Say what you will about the man, he can be cutting like no other in the public realm today, on a par with Anne Coulter or perhaps her better. He should go into politics himself. Poor old England needs somebody to slap her out of a stupor, and Simon's just the man to pull it off.

Well said. People tuned in just to see Simon tell it like it is. :)

“he can be cutting like no other in the public realm today,”

Which is to say that if he ever did run for politics, libs could trot out endless clips of him dressing down black performers and claim he is racist. But I don’t think that’s nearly the hot-button issue in England that it is here.
